Did you stay in maternity clothes after birth?

I'm trying to get as organised as possible before my new arrival and wondering what clothes I'll need in the early days.

Do most people stay in maternity clothes for a while? Particularly joggers/leggings /jeans etc? I'm assuming my tummy will be tender and swollen for a while. Is this right?

Yes, definitely! For about 8 weeks until they started falling down!

hidinginthenightgarden · 27/11/2018 07:18

Up until 2/3 months PP I think. People shrink back at different rates though.

Soiree · 27/11/2018 07:19

Yes for about 6 weeks, even now at 16 weeks I wear some as a lot of my maternity stuff is also nursing friendly.

Yes, you sort of start reverse cycling through your maternity clothes from largest to smallest! And lots of tops that work for nursing - I was always a fan of the strappy top under a normal top, strappy top pulls down, main top pulls up.

TheCrowFromBelow · 27/11/2018 07:21

Yes for a couple of weeks or so, my stretchy trousers , also I wore Joggers & PJs - something you can easily get dressed in and a top you can feed with if you are BFing.
I found a muslin cloth over the top helped. Comfy pants and lots of maternity pads. I got through way more than I thought I would.

Shmithecat · 27/11/2018 07:23

Yes, you'll still have a bump for a time, but that does differ from person to person. Unless you have a csection, your tummy won't necessarily be tender or sore. Get some nice ultra thin maternity pads though, they are must!

AvoidingDM · 27/11/2018 07:23

I think i was in mine for about 5 weeks. Tummy swollen yes but shouldn't be tender unless you have a c-section.

One thing I did find is I needed extra casual clothes. Not wearing work clothes and sicky baby I found myself running out of casual stuff.

Littlebelina · 27/11/2018 07:24

I was out of maternity trousers relatively quickly (2-3weeks think I was lucky) as they fell down and rubbed again my section scar. I could get into normal jeans but they weren't quite comfortable so ended up living in normal leggings and skirts.

MonaChopsis · 27/11/2018 07:34

I am still wearing some of my maternity tops and DD is 8 Grin but then I am large of nork and maternity tops are great for that. The trousers I wore for the first 6-8 weeks.

Poppins2016 · 27/11/2018 07:36

Everyone's different. You might end up surprised, like me... I wear some of my maternity clothes now that I've given birth because they're practical for breastfeeding, however I don't need to. My body shrank back to normal very quickly and wasn't tender (aside from stitches for a tear...). I was shocked!

MeredithShepherd · 27/11/2018 07:39

DS is 3 weeks and 2 days old and I’m still on my maternity clothes. I rushed myself out of them last time and wore jeans that were too tight for a while just to say I was back in my pre pregnancy clothes. I’m in no rush this time!!

naicepineapple · 27/11/2018 07:40

Yes for a couple of weeks then into stretchy / bigger clothes that I'd specifically bought for that reason.

SoupDragon · 27/11/2018 07:40

I think I needed mine for less than a month. Your stomach isn't firm like it was when it had a baby inside, it's squidgy so you don't really need actual maternity clothes for too long. You might need bigger clothes for a while though.

Everyone is different though, as others have said.

villainousbroodmare · 27/11/2018 07:41

Yes, for a few weeks at least as others have said. It takes a while to get back to your former fine lines!

SoyDora · 27/11/2018 07:47

My bumps disappeared within a couple of days but I still found maternity clothes more comfortable for a few weeks. Then progressed on to the most comfy of my normal clothes for a while!

kikibo · 27/11/2018 07:48

No. I just wore dresses as I did for the largest part of my pregnancy. I barely have maternity clothes (annoying as I've ripped my only pair of jeans with 2 weeks to go).
I remember looking down at my nethers right after DD was born and exclaiming "I can see my bits again!" 😁.

Was back in regular clothes at 1 month PP. Stayed in PJs for the first 10 days though.

Though stomachs shrink at different rates.

fedupandlookingforchange · 27/11/2018 07:51

Yes for a couple of weeks, then there were a few weeks when nothing fitted. I had a c section so had a sore scar as well. After 12 weeks I was back in normal clothes.

underneaththeash · 27/11/2018 08:59

I was in maternity trousers for about a month afterwards and then just bought a couple of cheap pairs of jeans a size bigger than usual.

Camomila · 27/11/2018 10:20

No, my bump went straight away but I couldn't put my jeans back on because I was too sore.

I had to go buy lots of new leggings (because I'd stretched them all when pregnant) and long button down shirt things to breast feed in.

I had one v neck maternity dress that was still useful.

darceybussell · 27/11/2018 10:27

I was back in my normal clothes pretty quickly but I am still wearing some of my maternity clothes a lot later because they are really comfortable! Blush

I'd recommend getting a couple of pairs of maternity leggings to wear afterwards as they will be useful in case of a c section, will fit over your tummy and should still be fine to wear once your bump has gone.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 27/11/2018 10:28

My actual tummy flattened down quite quickly but I lived in pyjamas or jogging bottoms for quite a while - I just wanted to be comfy plus was still bleeding etc.
