A x E = DI, B x E = AE, C x E = C, D x E = IA, E x E = BA,
F x E = E, G x E = JB, H x E = GI, I x E = FB, J x E = AC

Or they could all be

I like this answer, put this OP!

Or, if I learned to quote:

Or they could all be 0

8x tables. You can start with F xE=E, so F must be 1. CxE=E, so E = 0. Then W must be >4 because there's only 1 single digit answer except.for 0. Can't be 5- more than 2 final digits. Can't be 6- only one answer starting with 1. Can't be 7- no answer ending in 1. 8 works.

C=0, F=1, I=2, D =3, A=4, J = 5, B= 6, G=7, E=8, H =9.

Kicker, what part of the country are you in? I used to give problems like this to my Y6 top maths group, but in the lesson rather than homework. I would start with an easier one like the 5x though and help them with a 'way in' if needed.

Eh! I’m out of here my head hurts

NewName54321 · 26/11/2018 21:05

If you list the calculations then it is the multiplication table of the number represented by E.

FxE=E. F=1
CxE=C. C=0

There are no other single-digit answers, so E must be 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9
Look at ExE=BA next to find possibilities for B and A.

Make a table, keep substituting and cross off the numbers that each letter cannot represent.
A = —0– —1– 2 3 4 5 ...
B = —0– —1– 2 3 4 5...
etc.

This was my daughters homework over the weekend. She is also 12 and in year 8.

Went straight over my head!

You take the two equations with the same digits as letters
EE is BA
And
B
E is AE

Example for E = 8 then BA is 64 B is 6 and A is 4
Solving for the second equation
6 * 8 is 48 checks to A is 4 and E is 8

It’s a code problem

Ha I’m now getting ads on how to solve math and practice problems, they must have seen my confused face. I won’t bother with that, I’ll just ask the posters on this thread!
