New born hearing screening

Hi I don’t know if any one can help. I suffer from health anxiety, I have a new born who’s 5 days old. He passed his hearing screening in one ear on day 2 and failed the others at so we have to go back for a re test. I am so worried and I can’t sleep or concentrate, I’m just so scared. Can any one relate or give me any advice? Thank you

My friend's son failed 3 newborn hearing tests and only the fourth one at the hospital was positive. He is now 6 and has normal hearing. Obviously, there are no guarantees, but try not to stress until you have a definite diagnosis. Hugs

I get awful health anxiety.
My son failed both of his first 2. They then said on the off chance that they’d try 1 more time before referring us, especially as he was a c-section baby and quite often they’re a bit bunged up. He passed on the 3rd try.
Really depends how noisy the ward is too.
My daughter failed her first one and passed her second. Her hearing is fine, but she has small ear canals and is very prone to ear infections.

Sorry typo he passed one ear and failed the other ear on day 2.

It’s very hard not to stress. Just constantly worrying and thinking the worse.

It is common to have to retest. Try not to worry x

inatwist · 26/11/2018 19:59

Also just to reassure you, most babies born with hearing loss in just 1 ear learnt to speak completely normally. That’s what they told me when we were going through this.
If there’s hearing loss in both ears it’s more of a problem.

Teakind · 26/11/2018 20:20

Hi, the same thing happened to my daughter. I was really worried but she passed the retest. I think it’s really common to fail so try not to worry.

mayhew · 26/11/2018 20:34

Not "passing" the first screening is incredibly common. Just let the retest happen, it'll probably be fine. Our babies are fortunate that early screening is available. You are taking this opportunity to check. And that is all you can do, you are being a responsible parent.
But have a think about doing something for your anxiety. It'll suck the joy out of motherhood. And you surely don't want to pass it on to your child.

ToBeARockAndNotToRoll · 26/11/2018 20:49

OP, DS had exactly the same. I sobbed, very loudly in hospital that I hadn't made him properly. (EMCS after a 4 day failed induction may have had something to do with it) he went on to pass the additional screening.

As PP have said, please try not to worry. I told myself that if there was a problem, then at least we would know and could get referred for help asap. Speak to your HV and get support for your anxiety too, as it can easily spiral after a shock Flowers

nomorespaghetti · 26/11/2018 20:52

It's very, very common to need a retest. Try not to worry op. But even if your child does have hearing needs, it's not the end of the world. My dd is profound deaf, she's amazing and the light of my life. She has cochlear implants now and speaks really well. There are challenges of course, but i wouldn't change her for the world.

Muddlingalongalone · 26/11/2018 20:58

Both of mine failed newborn screening - dd1 was fine just had to go back for a retest, dd2 the retest showed her hearing loss and we started the formal testing almost straight away and she had her hearing aids by the time she was 4 months.
Don't be anxious - perfectly normal to fail especially if you had a natural birth and it was induced/drip or just quick. Something to do with amniotic fluid clearing out of babies system and definitely not the end of the world anyway as my VERY talkative 4 year old will be a prime example of.
DN took about 6 attempts and they were even doing home visits!

PastramiAndRye · 26/11/2018 20:58

My dd failed her hearing test in hospital so had to be retested. Was very quick and she passed no bother.

Vanillaradio · 26/11/2018 21:08

Ds failed in both ears on day 2. He was rechecked day 4 (We were still in hospital for various reasons) and passed. He us now a 5 year old with ultra sharp hearing ( especially if chocolate is mentioned!) I was told it was extremely common, especially after a c section, for a newborn to fail the test initially due to fluid in the ears. Most likely all is fine with your ds.

Longtalljosie · 26/11/2018 21:12

Was it quite a quick birth? That can lead to the ears being gunky. Is he sneezing a lot? If so that’s him clearing it...

EssentialHummus · 26/11/2018 21:17

It's incredibly common to need retesting OP Flowers. Congratulations on your little one.

WhyAmISoCold · 26/11/2018 21:26

I often process these screenings in my work. Totally normal and common OP. Don't worry. Happens all the time.

Penhaligon · 26/11/2018 21:30

The midwife who tested my little boy said approximately 50% of newborns fail the screening test as their ears are still drying out. With my first it was 2 weeks after birth that he was tested, my second was on the day he was born and then a week later. He failed initially and then passed eventually. I knew he could hear though as he kept jumping at different sounds.

snowone · 26/11/2018 21:38

My DD failed her newborn hearing test in one ear - we went back 6 weeks later for a follow up and she passed no worries. I think a lot of babies have fluid in their ears after birth. Try not to worry too much Smile

Bufferingkisses · 26/11/2018 21:41

I work in this area, honestly it's really really common as pp say. Please try not to worry Flowers

Smurfybubbles · 26/11/2018 21:46

DS failed in one ear and had to be retested. Apparently it can take a while for the gunk to clear out, try not to worry if you can!

Talkinpeece · 26/11/2018 21:48

My daughter failed MULTIPLE hearing tests
she was not deaf
just stubborn
fear not

NanooCov · 26/11/2018 22:09

It's really really common. In my area the health visitors used to do the hearing screening at home after a week or so - quiet home environment and a chance for babies' ears to degunge after birth. Now they do them in the noisy ward immediately after birth and there are loads of failures and retests. Including our DS2. He passed second time. Was ridiculously quick. Try not to let the anxiety spoil your early days with your little one.

Mdhil · 26/11/2018 22:46

Yes was a very quick birth due to being induced and it working to quickly on me.
