Living in Carlisle

We're moving to Carlisle. Anyone there can advise me on where to live/avoid.

Like any town there are good areas and not so good, where are you looking? Are you buying/renting?

MsAwesomeDragon · 26/11/2018 18:41

It depends on a lot of things. Do you have dcs? If so will you be looking for primary places or secondary? Some of the schools are better than others, just like everywhere.

The North of Carlisle (over the river from the "city" centre) is very nice, with good but oversubscribed schools.

Avoid houses near the river as we have been flooded a couple of times in the past few years.

Hi there. We shall be buying, we've looked in Wetheral an about 10 mins from city centre. We are both in our 50s and hubby has a job to go to

Hi there. We don't have any young children as we're both in our 50s. We are looking for a quieter life than we have in Milton Keynes

Wetheral is considered to be one of the nicer areas. You definitely will be amongst people of a similar demographic to you anyway Grin

Paulambrown65 · 26/11/2018 21:42

Is there anywhere that we should definitely avoid as it's quite hard to tell especially when a house looks good

OP posts:
clydeonabike · 26/11/2018 21:42

Wetheral is really lovely, village shop, pub and leisure centre at the crown hotel, gp surgery and a cafe...you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer village near Carlisle 😁

Paulambrown65 · 26/11/2018 21:48

I'm really worried about choosing the "wrong" area.
I've been told to avoid Wigton and maybe Silloth

The areas to the west of the city are generally less affluent. The east of the city means the M6 is easily accessible and Newcastle is just an hours drive. Forgot to mention Wetheral also has its own railway station which is a bonus!

Paulambrown65 · 26/11/2018 22:24

Thank you Clydeonabike for your responses, I certainly have a lot to think about.
One last question, do you know if Wetherall was affected by the floods?

OP posts:
Paulambrown65 · 27/11/2018 13:20

Please could someone tell me the areas that I should possibly avoid. There’s nothing better than advice from someone who actually knows the area.
Thank you

Wetheral itself is at the top of a hill and the village does not flood, one of the roads into the village does flood as it runs alongside the river but there are 3 routes to/from the village so you would not be cut off. As a PP has mentioned, just try to make sure you're away from the flood plain areas. Good luck in your search!x

Thank you Clydeonabike

No problem, if you're looking at villages around Carlisle, they're all pretty nice... in the town itself, the 'rougher' areas are usually considered to be Botcherby, Harraby and Raffles... north of the river, Lowry Hill is nice and much of Stanwix... hope this helps!

MsAwesomeDragon · 27/11/2018 17:16

I agree that the villages around Carlisle are lovely. It's the council/excouncil estates that can be rough, although there are plenty of nicer ones if you know where to look (which you don't because you don't live there yet).

I agree about avoiding wigton, there's a factory which can be smelly and they've had some problems with anti social behaviour in the evenings. It's about 25-30 mins drive from Carlisle as well so I wouldn't count it as Carlisle.

Whetheral, cargo, thursby, rockcliffe are all nice villages. There's lots of nice villages as long as you've got a car. There's very, very little in terms of public transport out to any of the villages.

MissMarplesKnitting · 27/11/2018 17:17

Brampton is nice too

bebesequin · 27/11/2018 20:27

I lived in Carlisle for nearly 3 years due to former partner's job.

We rented in Stanwix -lovely Victorian terrace which after Edinburgh would have been an absolute bargain to buy (owners offered to sell).
It was within walking distance of city centre.Pleasant safe walk into town.

City itself very compact - nice independent shops and a few of the larger ones. Nice bars and decent eating places. Quite like a large town really.

Lovely big city centre park- Bitts Park happy memories of jogging there and taking the DCs to the castle and Tullie House Museum.

Weekends you can easily be in the lakes within an hour, direct trains from Carlisle and Wetheral to Newcastle. Great little eatery in Wetheral called Fantails I think. Also easy to get to Scottish borders.

Loved our time there. Really friendly people I had two in school and one pre school and made lots of friends. My then partner loved the team he worked with at the hospital- again all went out of their way to invite to social things.

We had friends in Wetheral and Brampton also I think Warwick Bridge. Once went for a pub lunch in Rockcliffe and it looked pretty. Armathwaite is nice as well but much further out.

Quite nostalgic for it - have vowed to take the now grown up DCs back for a weekend sometime.

Lots of the villages on the outskirts are lovely - Great Orton, Wetheral, Cumwhinton, Great Corby, Warwick-on-Eden, Aglionby etc.

The Warwick Road/surrounding streets area was where most of the flooding occurred so I would suggest avoiding there, although a lot of the houses are beautiful.

The rougher bits are, I would personally say, Botcherby, Raffles, Longsowerby and Old Harraby (New Harraby is better than Old but still not amazing!)

If you want to be in the city rather than a village, Stanwix/Lowry Hill is considered the "nice" area.

The main village of Wetheral doesn't flood, there are a couple of houses that count as Wetheral that are right by the river that I assume did flood.

If you want opinions on specific areas once you've done more research into houses you like, let us know Smile

DrDillWithIt · 27/11/2018 20:42

Just to add - I was meaning the houses on the road into Wetheral that PP mentioned when I said some by the river flooded Smile

Just remembered more nice villages - Kirkbampton, Thurstonfield & Moorhouse.

Agree that Silloth & Wigton aren't Carlisle and I personally would avoid them too.
