Could/how would you put a stone on in a few weeks?

I really really don’t want this to turn into a skinny/fat bashing thread.

For various reasons I’ve always been really slim, this year has been utterly shit food wise and life wise and I’m thinner than I’ve ever been. I’ve been ignoring it and ignoring it but I’ve tried my “Xmas” dress on tonight and it is hanging off me.

Realistically I could do with putting a stone on in around 3 weeks.

But overeating isn’t going to do it. I’ve never been able to eat past the point of feeling full/had enough. We weren’t raised to “clear our plates” we just ate until we were done. My relationship with food is a mess at this point. If I could take a pill to give me all the calories I need in a day and not have to eat I’d happily take it.

What I need is calorie rich food but in small portions I think. Whenever I’ve tried to put on weight before I would buy a few multipacks of snickers and make myself eat one after each meal. Have also tried complan but drinking milk to excess makes me feel sick and bloated.

Any ideas?

Carbs and sugar

SmartyPants0 · 26/11/2018 08:33

I would also question how long this has been going on for and if you know what the trigger was...
I know that I'm really stressing about something at the moment and don't feel like eating, I know that I should eat but feel full after a few mouthfuls.

Do you have an overactive thyroid maybe?

Could you drink weight gain supplements - like Ensure / Complan? You can get them from the chemist.

Use full fat everything, lots of butter on your toast etc. Horlicks made with milk before bed.

Gradually increase portion sizes, so your stomach doesn't get a shock, which it might if you suddenly do it.

You probably won't get a stone by christmas, but you will be on the right track.

Have you always had the uncomfortable full feeling or is it a recent thing - that much of a weightloss is not a good sign

xeran · 26/11/2018 09:50

@gobbin, I’m right on the cusp of an overactive thyroid. I get quite bad night sweats and the GP thought it could be that, but I’m just outside their range.

Re the uncomfortable feeling, I’ve never really over eaten. You know when people eat a large meal and they relax and say they are stuffed, I hate that feeling, it’s not something I associate with pleasure. As kids we didn’t overeat or eat for “fun”. We had three good meals a day and that was that. Didn’t snack or have treats unless it was a special occasion. If we only ate half of our dinner we weren’t pushed to eat it all.

Yes I would add milkshake drinks throughout the day. Katie Hopkins did something similar for that stupid documentary

Hi, you have my sympathy. DS2 was like this as a child. He hated eating and could only eat miniscule portions, so we had to find ways to get as many calories into him in as few bites as possible.

I suggest
korma curries thickened with ground almonds and cream
wholemeal or seed toast with nut butter and jam
buttermilk scones with clotted cream and jam
avocado dip: mashed avocado with sour cream - dip with corn chips or pita rather than crudites

Try to mix fats and proteins with carbs, even in small amounts.

Caramel or spiced pumpkin lattes and chai teas with whipped cream are supposed to be full of calories. Never had one but seen loads of warnings about them, so if you could manage one of those once a day as a drink between meals it might help.

Luxembourgmama · 26/11/2018 10:03

Drink protein shakes?

JustLetMeStapleTheVicar · 26/11/2018 10:05

Ensure shakes are a good shout - I know someone with end stage liver disease who has issues with muscle wastage and severe weight loss, so he's prescribed these, but as a PP said you can buy them from the pharmacy. Try to up your protein intake too, and chew your food to mush before you swallow, to avoid that awful bloated feeling.

Eat Nutella from the jar. I think it’s like 80 cals a teaspoon.

Quartz2208 · 26/11/2018 10:14

I would check with the GP its not something like GERD as well

theredjellybean · 26/11/2018 10:16

I'd try small amounts of very high calorie dense food little and often
It sounds as if the issue is with volume in your stomach.
I have similar when stressed.. Feel utterly overwhelmed by plate covered in food.
And the thought of trying to eat a snickers after a meal is making me nauseated.

But instead of three meals and snacks try six small meals plus snacks. If your not feeling hungry a small portion of something is easier to tackle than a huge meal.
So maybe first breakfast really small portion of granola with full fat milk.
Add protein powder to it to add calories.
Second breakfast a few hrs later toast with avocado
First lunch chicken mayo and avocado sandwich or small roll. Try the sandwich thins as they are less filling than two bits of bread.
Second lunch cheese scone and butter
Dinner.. Small serving of lasagne (sauce made with double cream and lots of cheese)
Supper. Cheese and biscuit.
Add in full fat or complain shakes.

I wonder if you fear feeling uncomfortable so eat tiny portions.. If you just allowed yourself to think its OK to eat a few mouthfuls at each 'meal' and took away the fear, you might find it easier to eat little and often.
Sympathy though as my relationship with food has in the past been shocking

vampirethriller · 26/11/2018 11:48

Cashew butter is nicer than peanut. (I think so anyway)
I was very thin a couple of years ago after sepsis and the doctor recommended Complan drinks as well as my usual meals.

LarkDescending · 26/11/2018 12:25

I have problems eating any more than a small amount at a time (in my case this is a new thing following illness & major intestinal surgery). The advice I have been given is to have tasty nutritious snacks in the house - avocado, nuts, hummus, taramasalata, fish pate - to have with breadsticks or toasted flatbread, little and often. Also kefir (tastes like drinking yoghurt) which keeps the gut flora happy.

I wouldn’t cope with even one Snickers, let alone a bag of them!
