Following through re. kids not picking up toys

WWYD?

Kids (ages 5 and 7) tipped toys all over the floor a few hours ago. Kids refused to tidy toys because they are “too busy” or “don’t want to tidy all the time” 🙄
FWIW, they don’t tidy anywhere near all the time. Mostly I end up picking up toys from the floor after they’ve gone to bed.

Kids have been told that toys in question will go to the charity shop if they’re still on the floor at bedtime because I am sick of picking up their toys.

Toys are still all over the floor. 5 yr old is about to be taken upstairs for bath time.

So, what to do?
Actually give them all to the charity shop even though some of them are toys that at least one child likes and probably wants to keep?
Or stuff them all in a cupboard or the loft for a week or two?
Or something else altogether?

Beating in mind I failed totally by confiscating toys for a week or two at a time I think you should take them to the charity shop.
You might have more luck than me in the long term then 😫.

I'm one of those that thinks if you make a threat you should follow it through, it's always worked well for me. But then I'm not a parent, I've looked after nieces and nephews and worked with kids (school, nursery, holiday club etc).

Did you mean it when you said it or was it a bluff to try get them to tidy up?

I don't like parting with things, so I would probably tell the children I was cross earlier because they were being rude and I didn't mean it. But they have 5 minutes whilst I go make a cup of tea and whatever toys are left out I will tidy up and put them in the loft. They will not have them back until they can tidy up every day. But if you don't mind parting with the toys I'm sure there are plenty of children out there that wouldn't mind some 2nd hand toys for Christmas.

Pleased to report that when I went back downstairs to get the 7 yr old up for his bath, the toys were all back in boxes Grin
