Would you buy a two year old a Ukulele?

Dc, almost two and a half, love playing pretend guitar (think, Madame gazelle, bing bong song!). I don't think it's worth bothering with a keyboard guitar as I think they'd get more enjoyment out of one with strings. Been looking in Argos and they have ukuleles for about £15, but I'm a bit worried that the string are too dangerous?

Why would they be dangerous?!

DD (now 7) has had one for years and loves it, her DD2 (17) plays and they play together, its lovely!

Singlenotsingle · 25/11/2018 16:38

Toy ones presumably? My dgs had a toy guitar with strings. It played tunes. He never got hurt though.

Mahalo do a lovely range of Ukuleles in different colours DD has the purple one.

I should add the Maholo was recommended to me by the local guitar shop for a beginner.

My 2.5 year old has a ukulele. It was originally DH's. She regularly 'plays' songs on it from DH's guitar book and loves it. (All the songs have the same 'tune' and the words to Twinkle Twinkle or the like).

OfDragonsDeep · 25/11/2018 16:47

Only if they weren’t my child Grin

DeadButDelicious · 25/11/2018 17:02

My two year old has a ukulele her uncle got her for her birthday. She loves it.

katseyes7 · 25/11/2018 17:14

Not personally, no. Unless, as someone previously said, you just want a 'pretend guitar'.
My OH is a musician and he can play anything with strings. He says he'd avoid a ukulele like the plague. Apparently they're a nightmare to tune, even if you know what you're doing. He taught my stepson to play the guitar from being three years old.

ForalltheSaints · 25/11/2018 17:52

I'd wait a little while longer, but if it is a desire to play a musical instrument, this is good in my opinion.

Bluerussian · 25/11/2018 17:55

Yes would buy one. Mine had one, then another. Is now 39 an world famous guitarist.

Bluerussian · 25/11/2018 17:55

PS: He also had a little keyboard.

toomuchtooold · 25/11/2018 18:02

If you do, get someone to tune it for you, not like standard guitar tuning but so that it plays a major chord if you strum it without holding down any of the strings. That way any noise he makes with it will at least be in tune!

BackWhenIWas4 · 25/11/2018 18:06

Dd had one at that age. I'd rather listen to an enthusiastic child with a ukelele than a recorder (voice of bitter experience!)

Blacktoffeecat · 25/11/2018 18:07

DS got one for Christmas when he was 2. He was very happyGrin

Tuning my guitar makes me cry. Tuning my uke and I pray for the end Sad

Ive got a digital tuner but I still suffer from the same existential crisis each and every time. Super fun to play though Smile

Forforkssake1 · 25/11/2018 18:27

Since she's two, I'm not worried about it being tuned! lol

Drum sets are much better for small children. No chance of playing a wrong note !

mininionsteve · 25/11/2018 20:13

My DS now nearly 2 1/2 was given one last Christmas from his Grandma as he loved having a go on hers. He loves playing it we just put it out of reach when he isn't as he tries to stand on it occasionally. It not a toy one and he's never hurt himself. Go for it I say!

I purchase musical instruments and glitter when I dislike the child's parents, personally.

Sweetooth92 · 25/11/2018 20:17

For someone I hated or wanted to torture? Absolutely. For a two year old in my own earshot? I’d rather shit in my hands and clap to be honest.
But if you’ve the patience of a saint absolutely, I doubt they’d be able to hurt themselves on it 😊
