I had my wisdom tooth out 3 weeks ago.. diagnosed with dry socket today, & infected stitches which have been removed.
I'm now back at home with some disgusting tasting cotton wool in my mouth.... how long will this take to heal?? Will it have to be re-packed? Will the pain stop now?
I'm supposed to be going on holiday in 2 weeks not sure I'm going to make it.

I had it. I had antibiotics for it and it took 4 days for them to kick in. The pain lasted for a week from the beginning to when the antibiotics worked. The pain was awful and even my cocodamol 30/500 barely touched it.

The dressing should help. Ibuprofen is a good painkiller. You can take up to 600mg 3-4 times daily, and paracetamol too if that's not enough. (As long as you don't overdose on either) Bathe the area gently with warmed salty mouthrinses, it's a mild antiseptic.

I think it took about a week for that disgusting dressing to dissolve but all was fine after that.

Thanks.. I'm hoping I don't have to keep getting it re-packed, trying to think positive. The nasty taste has faded a bit (thankfully) I just really hope that horrendous pain does not come back.

I had it, and I didn’t need to get it repacked after it was cleaned out and packed the first time, and the antibiotics worked pretty quickly too.

Once I got on the right antibiotics it went away relatively quickly. But it was a good 1-1.5 weeks of agony beforehand.

if you get the right antis, you should be ok by holiday.

This has brought back memories of my wisdom tooth extraction where I was in so much pain after I walked to the dentist all teary and asked the receptionist if he could see me. Dentist came out, looked at my mouth in the waiting room and said
"Yes you have dry socket, I bet you rinsed your mouth out didn't you. Take some painkillers".

Then sent me on my way 🤬

It's awful having a dry socket, it's as painful as having toothache. Get some difflam mouthwash from your chemist, it has local anaesthetic in it, keep yourself topped up with painkillers, taking them with a drink with caffeine in it helps them to work quicker, Nurofen plus & paracetamol taken alternately should keep the pain down. If the pain hasn't reduced in a couple of days I would contact your dentist again, you may need antibiotics.

Just bumping. It's day 4 since I had the packing put in and my gum on that side feels very "tight" I have looked inside with a torch and there is a very narrow "line" where you can see the packing clearly there. The hole itself seems to be healing quickly and the narrow space is all that's left.
However it feels very annoying, can definitely tell there's something there, not painful just really irritating. Can't get an appointment TIL Tuesday.
I'm worried my gum will seal the packing in ..
