Quincey vs tonsillitis

Really hoping someone may have some experience of this and be able to advise.
Basically around 24 hours ago i started getting huge pain and swelling in my right tonsil. Just for background I have around 5 hours of tonsillitis a year so am familiar with symptoms etc.
I went to the out of hours and the gp was fairly confident it was a quincey and sent me to our local hospital. However the consultant has said this is a particularly nasty bout of tonsillitis.
However since being back from hospital armed with antibiotics, pain relief etc my temperature is just becoming higher and higher my throat is now pretty much closed - am drooling, can't swallow and when I look in my throat it's black spotted with pus everywhere.
My (very long winded) question is that can tonsillitis be this bad? I've never experience pain in my throat like it and my temp is around the 40 mark with antibiotics

You must go back to gp, a quinsy is dangerous, don't neglect it, nowgimmeagain.

DramaAlpaca · 25/11/2018 02:13

You need to get that looked at again, it sounds nasty.

Sounds like you need to be seen again urgently, OP. Don't worry about being a nuisance. Quinsy can be life-threatening. Better to be seen and it be a false alarm than leave a rapidly escalating quinsy overnight.

Pumkinsoup · 25/11/2018 02:17

Go to A&E, you've been at the GP, don't wait if you have fever higher and higher...

DD had quincy, it requires injection of very powerful antibiotic. GP sent her right to A&E.

PinsPegs · 25/11/2018 02:19

I'd phone 111 and ask for advice. I really really don't know but I think it's something that needs to be taken seriously. One of my adult kids had symptoms of Quincy before she was told it was just very bad tonsillitis - I don't know but maybe it's one of those things that's hard to diagnose....

Anyway, we can't tell you, I think you should speak to someone from 111 for advice.

Hope it clears up soon. It sounds horrible

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 25/11/2018 02:22

Phone 111, Quincy can be horrible and really serious, but If I'm your throat is closing then maybe A+E might be best shout. Hope you feel better soon!

Littleroundone · 25/11/2018 08:47

My DH had a Quincy a few years ago you need to go to a& e to get iv antibiotics and have it drained. He spoke funny like he had a golf ball stuck in throat when he had his which is a sign and his throat was closing up. Even now when he has a sore throat the gp gets called as we take no chances as it can be very serious.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

My sister had quinsy after being told she didnt need antibiotics , she collapsed and ended up in hospital pn IV antibiotics its can be really serious .

TwoGinScentedTears · 25/11/2018 09:03

The only time I've seen Quincey was in my sister who like you suffered recurrent tonsillitis. Her entire tonsil was one big yelllow bag of pus. She knew it felt different and she couldn't swallow anything and her temp was through the roof.

A an E gave her IV antibiotics (3 rounds of) and booked her in for a tonsillectomy.

When the surgeon (months later) took them out he said they were some of the worst he'd seen and he could see that she'd had Quincey.

FaithInfinity · 25/11/2018 09:06

It sounds like it’s progressed so I would go and get reviewed. If it’s so bad that you can’t swalow, you will struggle to swallow the antibiotics meaning you won’t be able to get better. Definitely get seen again.

Butterflybelly · 25/11/2018 09:08

I suggest straight to A&E. Do not bother with 111. Quincy can be dangerous. I was critically ill and could have died. I later had my tonsils out and rarely even get a sore throat now. All will be fine but you will likely need IV antibiotics.

Quartz2208 · 25/11/2018 09:12

a&e

Fairylea · 25/11/2018 09:12

Go to a and e and get it checked.

But- yes tonsillitis can be that nasty. I had one particularly bad bout of it one year that went on for weeks and weeks, black purple swollen tonsils, I felt the most unwell i had ever felt, couldn’t even drink without extreme pain. It took 3 lots of clarithromycin back to back to clear it and then a longer dose of cefalexin to keep it away.

Nowgimmeagin · 25/11/2018 09:44

Thank you for all the responses, nice to know I'm not just being dramatic! Temps a lot better today and I'm swallowing a little easier. Tonsil still huge, black and weeping so I'm going to see if there is some improvement in that today if not I will be getting checked again!

If you are drooling or cannot swallow fluids pls return to A&E

Nowgimmeagin · 27/11/2018 12:03

In case anyone has similar, turns out you CAN have tonsillitis that bad as a pp said! On a second antibiotic as well as penicillin and am now feeling so much better. Was definately worth seeing the gp again so many thanks for all the good advice x

ichifanny · 27/11/2018 15:00

Get to a&e black doesn’t sound like normal tonsillitis you need to see ENT

Nowgimmeagin · 27/11/2018 16:19

Thank you @fairylea! Very pleased to be on the other side of it
