Broken big toe?

Sorry, putting this hear as more traffic...
DD's (13) big toe was stood on today by a horse.. It's very swollen and sore and hurts to move / walk. She's had ibroprofen and iced it but is pain (she's a wimp too!)
Can doctors / out of hours do anything or are we doing all we can?
Google tells me to ice / painkillers but to go to A&E if its a broken big toe - I feel like we'd be wasting their time though!
Any advice MN? :)

Broken big toe is a trip to A&E. Smaller toes you can treat at home if not bad, but big toe is needed for balance.

See the section "When to go to hospital" www.nhs.uk/conditions/broken-toe/

Thank you, she's asleep now so will have another look in the morning.. Always something!

Don't give ibuprofen if it could be broken. Paracetamol

I had a horse-related accident around that age too. Broke all my toes and most of my metatarsals but funnily enough not the big toe. At the time the dr told us that the bone is very hard to break! Obviously do still get it checked out but there’s a good chance it’s just very badly bruised - fingers crossed.

Thank you all! OH thinks I'm overreacting! I'll definitely get it checked!
Just out of interest, why not ibuprofen? I gave her some thinking it would help the swelling..

I broke my big toe and the hospital didn’t do anything bar give me a boot to protect it. The GP sent me to A&E though as they need to x Ray

no ibuprofen for broken bones is because the initial inflammation after injury is the start of the healing process.
stopping the inflammation can slow down the healing of the bone.

I wouldn’t worry about the Ibuprofen. Most of the times I’ve asked an ortho surgeon if they want to avoid NASIDs they’ve just looked at me like I’m a bit simple.

the advice is relatively new. (couple of years)
in a healthy person it probably doesn't affect healing as much, so don't worry for now.
