Is it possible to cater a meal for this combination of people?

8 people including 3 under 5 (2-4 years old) one of the adults is a vegan but also allergic to nuts, aubergines and is also a coeliac. My husband is a coeliac too but he’s also allergic to soy.
So basically I need a vegan meal with no wheat, nuts, aubergine or soy!

All the recipes I search on vegan pages contain one or more allergen. I am tempted to cancel! Also, with 3 kids the meal can’t be too spicy- unless I cook 2 separate dishes but then I was worried about cross- contamination.

cookieandkate.com/dairy-free-gluten-free-and-nut-free-vegetarian-recipes/. You might find something here?

EmbraRocks · 24/11/2018 19:18

Oh bugger thats not fully a vegan site! Can you ask favourite recipes?

gnoomi · 24/11/2018 19:18

I'd do a mezze. Gf pitta bread, hummus, babaganousch (kept separate so the aubergine allergy is ok) falafel etc, nice salads? All home made and you could brush the pitta with zatar and a bit of olive oil and cut into triangle and bake for a few mins in the oven then its a bit like tortilla chips

I’ve made a “shepherds pie” with lentils instead of mice? It’s not fine dining but it would feed people

BurpAndRustle · 24/11/2018 19:18

Lentil dhal with rice

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 24/11/2018 19:18

Lentil shepherds pie and veg.

Jacket potato with fillings ie veggie chili, beans and cheese. Plus salad.

BurpAndRustle · 24/11/2018 19:19

I just spat out my drink at mice shepherd’s pie Teeny. I’m sure that’s not vegan, so best to sub in the lentils.

Teenytinyvoice · 24/11/2018 19:21

Lol, I blame the 2 year old who Will Not Go To Bed.

Shepard’s pie chez Teeny does not usually contain mice! 🐭

gnoomi · 24/11/2018 19:21

Oooh and tabbouleh made with quinoa.

Laska2Meryls · 24/11/2018 19:25

yeah but Mice are vegan ain't they ?

Etino · 24/11/2018 19:25

Butternut squash and sage risotto. With Parmesan/ roasted pine nuts for those who can tolerate it.

Otherwise a big lentil stew with sweet potatoes, ginger chickpeas etc.

Laska2Meryls · 24/11/2018 19:31

.. sorry bad joke.. ..

Curry? good for for grown ups and do a mixed veggie rice dish for the kids maybe with peas and sweetcorn ? Madhur Jaffrey's Black eyed beans with mushrooms is lush! Alsol as her hot an spicy chickpeas..Meera Sodah's spiced cabbage is also great , we eat these a lot chez Laska ( despite being meat eaters )

Alabasterangel6 · 24/11/2018 19:33

I’d also suggest a mezze or tapas meal

Patatas bravas
Cold sliced meats
New potatoes in garlic butter
Cold sliced cheeses/marinated cheeses
Olives
Flatbread or pittas
Grilled sweetcorn mini cobs
Plate of roasted veg
Chicken kebab skewers
Halloumi kebab skewers
3 bean salad
Green Salad
Safe salad dressings/oil and balsamic

Most of which could be prepared in advance? And doesn’t have to be served at once, tapas style.

MarklahMarklah · 24/11/2018 19:35

Rice, potatoes and lentils are all gluten free and vegan, so you could perhaps make one or more of those your starting point?
Lentil dhal, chansa masala, and perhaps some potato based mild curry?
Or jacket potatoes with baked beans, houmous and a large salad?

Laska2Meryls · 24/11/2018 19:36

Bombay potatoes, Mushroom, cauliflower Sag and onion bhagees.
Could you get some 'tofu faux fishfingers' (sorry cant remember what they are called , bur sainsburys do them) for the kids to have with the rice..or pizza Margarita for non-coeliac , veggie kids(can be cooked and served separately)

E20mom · 24/11/2018 19:39

My family does that combo all the time as well as a few more people with serous allergies. We do a general spread with labels on what's safe for who. Once you get used to doing it it's a lot more simple. Trying to do one pot that caters for all generally means no one really enjoys it.

HoustonBess · 24/11/2018 19:45

All kinds of curry would fit with that. Give the kids loads of pappadoms and yoghurt (vegan if need be) and rice with a little bit of the curry and they'll be happy, chuck on some pomegranate seeds to make it look fancy.
Or else I love a good pilav, sounds dull they can be absolutely amazing. This will give you the idea www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/jun/02/meera-sodha-recipe-asparagus-fennel-pea-pilau
You could also do a vegan shepherd's pie, eg www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/vegetables-recipes/vegan-shepherd-s-pie/ (use gf bread for breadcrumbs or I think you can use seeds as an alternative)
You could also do a roast dinner pretty easily, just look up a nut-free egg-free loaf recipe, there are plenty out there.

Shadowboy · 24/11/2018 20:00

Ok so curry type dishes seem to be ok? My kids don’t like curry but I could try and do two separate dishes. I’m going to avaid having any nuts on the table as apparently the nut allergy is very severe! I’d rather not risk it. I like the tapas idea- would vegans mind meaty dishes on the table around their meat free food- I.e. is it not insensitive? I love tapas though so that would be a type of meal I’d be comfortable cooking!

I think it probably depends on the vegan, could you ask? If it's just adult you could try to just keep meat dishes at the other end of the table. I think vegans at the more militant end of the scale might object! When I was a fully-fledged veggie (a bit more flexible these days) then having meat on the table in front of me felt like someone had slapped a plate of roadkill down and expected me to eat anyway!

Redskyandrainbows67 · 24/11/2018 20:14

Baked potato’s with a choice of toppings in small bowls and salad

Bean chilli and rice?

Vegetable stew with a potato or rice. You could grate some cheese for the non vegans to add on top

nocoolnamesleft · 25/11/2018 13:36

Butternut squash and chick pea tagine. As long as you don't add nuts, it ticks all the requirements.
