Willy Wonka... sinister

Is it just me?

Watching it with DS (4) and I'm surprised he hasn't freaked out.

Can't say I've really watched it before but it's pretty odd, sinister and a little scary!

The original film was only loosely based on the book, the Tim burton version is more accurate to it. (Most of roald Dahls books are very dark.

I think quite a few bits in the newer version are scary for kids. Especially the squirrels.

Pebblespony · 24/11/2018 16:19

The bit in the boat in the tunnel in the original is weird. Especially the bit with the chicken being killed.

JustfiedandAncient · 24/11/2018 16:23

I was just thinking of the chicken bit too!

keepingbees · 24/11/2018 16:26

I'm watching it too and it is a bit creepy/strange, although I enjoyed it when I was young.
I watched Matilda recently, again I enjoyed it when I was young but haven't seen it since a teenager. It actually made me feel quite uncomfortable, like basically watching child abuse.
I think adult minds see things differently

Ds1 has always been terrified of both versions. He used to close his eyes for the tunnel scene in the original. He still won't watch the remake (he's 14 now) because there's too much in it that scares him. Melting dolls, squirrels and I can't even remember what else.

cjt110 · 24/11/2018 16:33

It was the original we were watching.. Glad it's not just me who doesn't like it.

Was actually pleased when DS asked for CBeebies lol

I've never liked it but my kids love it. On the original version the bit where they are in the room that shrinks makes me hyperventilate 🙈

AamdC · 24/11/2018 17:23

I prefer the original to the remake tbh, the remake freaks me out a bit.

ToBeARockAndNotToRoll · 24/11/2018 17:24

Gene Wilder was the better Willy Wonka though...

TroysMammy · 24/11/2018 17:29

Roald Dahl's books are sinister. He also wrote Tales of the Unexpected.

captainpantbeard · 24/11/2018 17:31

I love the tunnel bit! And grandpa Joe and the golden ticket song. And Gene Wilder was fab.

Frustratedmum78 · 24/11/2018 17:34

Road Dahl films aren’t very scary at all, now, Watership down on the other hand.....

LIZS · 24/11/2018 17:34

Is he not supposed to be ! Roald Dahl's writing was deliberately dark.

legolammb · 24/11/2018 17:37

Yes, very much so. I always found Gene Wilder rather creepy

jacksonmaine · 24/11/2018 17:41

I hate Road Dahl's stuff. Tales of the Unexpected was horrifc. Anyone remember the pipes leaking blood in the house of horrors - scarred me for life! Confused

jacksonmaine · 24/11/2018 17:42

Gene Wilder was fantastic though.

RagingWhoreBag · 24/11/2018 17:46

Oh god yes - Gene Wilder is super creepy and that music...”come with me.... and you’ll be...in a world of pure imagination” with the sinister background music. and not to mention how mean he is to all the kids.

EnidButton · 24/11/2018 18:57

The Phantom of the Opera with sweets.

It's supposed to be isn't it? Creepy cruel adults and 'orrible kids were Roald Dahl's speciality. Look at The Twits or George's Marvellous Medicine. No-one is nice in either of those.

EnidButton · 24/11/2018 18:58

Gene Wilder was perfect as Willy Wonka.

iwasaterribleperson · 24/11/2018 19:05

Tales of the Unexpected was horrible, I caught an episode ‘flypaper’ a while ago and it terrified the life out of me ... although I don’t think Roald Dahl actually wrote that one iirc .

EnidButton · 24/11/2018 19:09

I really like Roald Dahl btw. He was one of my favourite authors as a child. He's not a writer who wrote to please adults and parents.

redsummershoes · 24/11/2018 19:10

I love geene wilders opening scene!
