You need baking powder not bicarb.

It often says on the side of the box of baking powder

BurpAndRustle · 24/11/2018 14:56

4 tbsp per lb. HTH.

GaryBaldbiscuit · 24/11/2018 14:56

You need 2:1 cream of tartar to bicarb to making baking powder. (2tsp cream of tartar to 1tsp bicarb) and you need about 2tsp baking powder to every 6oz (150g) plain wholemeal flour.

GaryBaldbiscuit · 24/11/2018 14:57

thanks odd socks

SillyPsychicAcid · 24/11/2018 15:01

I thought you needed to increase it by 50% for whole meal as it’s denser though?

RippleEffects · 24/11/2018 15:03

I've always used 1 tsp/ 100g.

When I was little we used to make baking powder from 2x cream of tartar and 1 x bicarb.

GaryBaldbiscuit · 24/11/2018 15:05

now i am confused, but agree, it is denser, hence my asking the clever folk

CorianderSnell · 24/11/2018 15:21

I use 4tsp per 225g whether white or wholemeal.

You’re going to have to bake a lot of cakes with all the different answers and tell us whose ratio is best!

GaryBaldbiscuit · 24/11/2018 15:47

thanks coriander

i will leave the experimentation to dh Grin

2 tsp per 150g flour. Well thats what all recipes say here (in a country where self raising flour doesn't exist)

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/11/2018 17:53

4 tbsp per lb

It's nowhere near that much. This is why Mumsnet is not better. Google and find a proper source of information like a flour or baking powder manufacturer. People post all sorts of crap on here and it is taken as Gospel. Very odd indeed.

redsummershoes · 24/11/2018 17:55

just baking powder.
it say how much you need on the pack. usually about 1 tsp for 100g flour.

GaryBaldbiscuit · 24/11/2018 18:15

Ta Barbara, Google unhelpful tbh, hence mn, you can ignore the post
