So.....as far as I know this might be a harmless house spider but I just found it in my shopping bag after buying fruit and veg in Morrisons. In fact I found it on my finger when I picked stuff up to unpack. Anyone know what sort it is?!

Obviously the DC's think I'm being a drama queen by even imagining it might be dangerousBlush

Now I did think Mumsnet was a diverse community and there might be someone interested in looking at spiders Grin
Anyone?

Can you poke it so it uncurls a bit?

HoleyCoMoley · 24/11/2018 13:59

Is it still alive, it looks dead

KingBobra · 24/11/2018 14:01

Looks like a dead common garden spider to me.

KingBobra · 24/11/2018 14:03

It looks a bit squished, but if it was unsquished I reckon the white markings match:

Definitely a Garden Spider. Harmless and quite beautiful in their own way Smile

citiesofbismuth · 24/11/2018 14:06

Just a garden spider.

GloGirl · 24/11/2018 14:13

Looks exactly like the huge ones I get in my garden, they make the biggest webs, one was about 8ft across once I couldn't actually work out how he swung across?!

I hate spiders but I think perhaps they're a light colour I quite enjoy admiring these ones.

It looks like a European common garden spider. It doesn't look like a false widow, if that is what you are worried about. The Natural History Museum has an identification service, if you want to know for sure. You can go there in person or phone them for advice, then post it to them.

AFingerofFudge · 24/11/2018 14:29

Ah ok. Common spider. No it is alive and in DS3's Bug Safari Kit so I'll let it into the garden.
Thanks for opinions, I can stop giving it sideways glances and give it a friendly smile instead Smile

Glad wee spidey is ok Smile

A huge dead hairy spider once fell out of my washing machine, poor thing had obviously crawled in but ended up going through a 40c cycle Sad Gave me the fright of my life even though it was dead. I can post a pic but it's a close-up and and may give people nightmares Shock
