Ouch, I've got a piece of glass stuck in my foot

Any suggestions for getting a sliver of glass out of my foot? I've tried tweezers but there's nothing to get hold of. I've soaked my foot and tried to squeeze it to the surface but that's just made it even more painful. I've seen drawing paste mentioned on MN before - does it work? I need a quick fix as I have 6 girls coming for a sleepover this afternoon and can't walk on my foot!

A&e is your best bet you
Might cause further damage poking about yourself.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 24/11/2018 12:02

That is not for a&e! Please don't go there. Minor injuries is your best bet.

Obviouspretzel · 24/11/2018 12:05

A lot of hospitals do not have a minor injuries unit. Is it an emergency ? No. Is it an accident? Yes.

When I had the same I got drunk and got my oh to dig it out. Maybe not the most sensible approach (esp considering he was drunk too!) but it worked Grin

strawberrypenguin · 24/11/2018 12:06

If it's only a small bit you could try sucking it out with a calpol syringe. Otherwise it's A&E

pinkhorse · 24/11/2018 12:08

The baking soda and water paste should be on overnight really so no help to you now.
Try soaking it in vinegar for 30 minutes.

Fishandthechips · 24/11/2018 12:10

When ive had this ive just had to dig with tweezers until its at the surface enough to scrape it out. Exactly what you want to be doing with your Saturday I know!
In my experience if you stick the tweezers on a bit that really hurts and makes a scrapy noise then youve found where the glass is!

TattiePants · 24/11/2018 12:35

I’ve tried soaking it and then digging around with tweezers. Taken loads more skin off but still can’t get at it. I’ll try soaking in vinegar and I have some mag sulphate now to try. If there’s no luck with that I guess it’s the walk in centre or GP next week.

Drawing paste is called black icthamol.

Littlebelina · 24/11/2018 12:39

Don't wait until the week, you don't want to get an infection. Our hospital trust lets you check waiting times for a&e + minor injuries online so you can see if they are busy.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 24/11/2018 12:43

The drawing paste did nothing for my DSs horrible deep splinter in a delicate place (minor injuries nurse couldn't get it out either). Had to 'work its own way out', took a couple of weeks of antiseptic cream and plaster and then I could squeeze it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/11/2018 12:44

Can you get to a Podiatrist ( most likely private , NHS Podiatry is very scarce)

We are experts with our scalpels ( glass is a bugger , I can feel/hear it in the blade rather than see it . At least with a splinter there's a chance its visible)

If thats not possible , keep bathing it , strong salt water is good , and maybe get some felt ( you'll find it in the FootCare bit of a pharmacy) , cut a ring shaped pad to keep the pressure off .

theboxofdelights · 24/11/2018 12:53

I have managed to get a few splinters of glass out of my feet over time.

I soak it in salt water for 20 minutes and then used a sharp crewel work needle to fish it out. I am no expert but have been able to do what Lisa said above, feel it with the needle.

Doje · 24/11/2018 12:59

Magnesium sulphate should do it (it's like magic!) as long as you can last in order to do it overnight. Otherwise I think it's be inclined to do A&E.

TattiePants · 24/11/2018 13:54

The magnesium sulphate is on and I can walk around the house ok on the side of my foot / tiptoes. I wouldn’t fancy putting a shoe on at the moment so will get some felt to pad it out. I don’t need to go anywhere over the weekend so as long as it doesn’t end up infected I’ll see what happens by Monday. I have the impending arrival of lots of 7 year olds to keep me busy!

I had to do exactly this with my daughter last night. I poked around with a pin until I got the pin under the glass and raised the sliver out slightly to grab with tweezers. It took a few goes. She had to grit hard to cope with jabby pain. So you might find this hard to do to yourself. Could anyone help?

TattiePants · 24/11/2018 14:11

DH had a try this morning with tweezers, a kids microscope and a head torch! That was bad enough, not sure I trust him with a pin. My DM is popping in later so she might have more luck.

Pop a few painkillers and have a drink before they try again. Best of luck OP.
