Help! What do I do with a wood burner when I want to go to bed?

Probably a v stupid question....recently moved to a house with a wood burner and used it for the first time this evening. No issues lighting it and have been enjoying the warmth all evening. Want to go to bed shortly - what do I do with it? There’s still half a log burning slowly - is it safe just to go to bed? Do I shut all the air vents or leave them open so it burns faster? Help!

Just push the vents in and go to bed :)

Just leave it! Ours is still toasty in the morning!

Yep, close the air vents and pop off to bed. The idea being that it then burns very slowly overnight and will still be warm in the morning. I often don't bother because we never really put the fire on in the morning so leave it as it is.
It's enclosed and safe.

Ooh actually, as you are using it for the first time - have you had the chimney swept? If not, get that arranged ASAP.

I smash what's on it as much as possible and spread it out then close the vents and leave it.

As you get used to it you'll start to learn how long certain sizes will burn for and adjust accordingly!

Either one is fine. If you shut it down it will stay in for longer and the heat will last longer. It might also still be in on the morning so easier to light.
If you leave it burning it will got out more quickly. Either is safe as long as the chimney has been swept, there is no risk of sparks setting the room on fire like there would be with an open fire. If you shut it down the glass may go black. Also generally burning the fire hotter is better for the chimney in the long term as the gases are burned away rather than depositing in the chimney.

I leave it to burn out on it's own, mine takes coal too and will often still be simmering when i get up. Saves on heating.

But I have to say unless you get a chimney sweep certificate every single year your house insurance will be invalid if the chimney catches fire.

The chimney has been swept in the past year - it’s actually an external clue rather than an internal chimney so that should be fine. I’ve left it burning as I don’t want it on in the morning anyway. Thanks!
