Passed driving theory but failed hazard perception

So frustrated. I comfortably passed the theory but failed the hazard part by 10 points. I know I spotted all the hazards in good time and only clicked once on each one, as they say you can score zero if you click too many times

Googling around this evening, apparently you need to click each hazard at least 2 or 3 times as if you're too quick off the mark, the system doesn't register it! FFS. It would be useful if they tell you this as part of your preparation

Anyone had similar experiences, and any advice apart from lots of clicks next time?!

do lots of practice. You need to click more than once, but not too fast - if it ‘thinks’ you’re randomly clicking it doesn’t accept it.

Winkybum · 23/11/2018 20:49

You need to click on the hazard and as the hazard develops i believe.

SnuggyBuggy · 23/11/2018 20:50

Can you get hold of one of those practice DVDs?

Both of those things are right.

If you click randomly and too much; it will score you zero.

But you do need to click more than once in each clip, there is always more than one hazard. Sometimes the hazards develop and you need to click more than once each hazard, too.

It is tough. Have you booked back in for another one?

Nenic · 23/11/2018 20:51

I only clicked once when I saw the hazard and passed. If you click a lot, you’ll fail

They do on the mock test apps Confused click about 2-3 times as the hazard develops. Just not constant clicking or it doesn't pass it.

katealana · 23/11/2018 20:54

You have to do loads of practice tests to pass the hazard perception, as it’s also about learning how the test works (which is annoying!). There are lots online that you can do and then watch back the results. They will show you on the video exactly when the five second window of points is for the hazard. You will learn what to look out for and when to click. I found clicking twice was the best way for me - often the first click was too early.

TyrionsNextWife · 23/11/2018 20:57

Some of the hazards you only need to click once but others more often - eg if you see a kid standing by the road you click once, but if the child stepped into the road you click again.

OrcinusOrca · 23/11/2018 20:58

I was always too fast for HP. In the end I clicked once when I saw it then again just after and passed when I did the real thing. I think it's easy to click when you see something moving but it's not necessarily a hazard until it's in your path etc.

Lottapianos · 23/11/2018 21:00

'But you do need to click more than once in each clip, there is always more than one hazard. '
Most of the clips have only one hazard

I scored full marks on five of the clips but scored zero for some others which is so frustrating. Sounds like clicking more than once on each hazard is the way forward. They definitely don't make that as clear as they should do in the preparation

The next date I could get is in 3 weeks time (I'm in London) Hmm

Op please Google for practise tests, there are official ones available (for free) online, that will give you the knack and it'll be a breeze

gobbin · 23/11/2018 21:03

If it’s any consolation I have car, bike and lorry licences and was doing an online HP test last week (that I’m going to get some kids to do at school) and I failed. That’s despite having to actually DO the HP test for my bike licence (it wasn’t invented when I did the car and lorry tests 😂).

I tend to click too soon - as an experienced driver I see the hazards waaay before and just seem to miss the ‘window’ early.

Lottapianos · 23/11/2018 21:33

Thanks for the advice folks. And thanks for sharing gobbin - I was feeling a bit like a failure Smile

I always clicked when I first spotted the hazard and then did it again a second or two later to make sure. I found this when practicing, I was too quick off the mark. There is definitely a knack to it so if you find an app on your phone (think I used BSMs at the time) you'll nail it next time.

ATowelAndAPotato · 23/11/2018 23:18

I have a family member in the police, they do all the advanced driving stuff. When the HP test cane in they all had to do it and the whole team failed the first time. Stupid clicks!
Best advice I got was if you think you see the hazard click, then ask yourself if it’s still there, if yes, click again. Should help if you’ve clicked “too early” the first time.

Thanks Towel. Poor coppers! I'm in good company 😁

Ds is doing the test today. From his practice runs he says it's click once when you see the hazard (but not too soon!) and click again if it becomes something you might have to do something about.

He described one of the hazards as a lorry parked on a corner. As an experienced driver, I'd ID that as a potential hazard immediately, but that's too soon for the test. It becomes a click-worthy hazard when the pedestrian disappears behind it (ie driver beware) and the second click is when the pedestrian starts to cross the road from behind the truck (ie driver take action).

Let's see if he passes!

Lottapianos · 24/11/2018 10:58

Good luck to DS Jelly!

They're also changing/have changed the hazard perception test which might be worth looking at if anyone's got one coming.

JellySlice · 24/11/2018 14:03

He passed Grin

Theory passed very comfortably, but scraped hazard perception by getting exactly the pass mark.

Lottapianos · 24/11/2018 14:06

Well done DS!
