Non scary book recommendations for 9yo boy with ASD

I've got a 9yo DS with ASD who will currently only read magazines. I’d really like to encourage him to read some more books, but he is easily scared, so need to find something non scary that he might enjoy.

His interests are football, cats, space, beano.

Any suggestions? Fact books acceptable, and maybe even preferable, as long as they aren’t scary!

My son was a reluctant reader at that age, was only into football. I bought him the Frankie's Magic Football series by Frank Lampard. He has since moved on to other football based novels but has also enjoyed the Tom Gates & Diary of a Wimpy Kid books among others. Are you a member of your library. Could your son choose some books without the pressure of having to finish them. If it scares him, it simply gets returned, hasn't cost anything. Also any films he enjoys that are based on books or have books based on them. That way he kind of knows what to expect so no nasty surprises, maybe some classics like Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Dr Doolittle

DS also 9 with ASD has enjoyed
Tom Gates series
13 Storey Tree house series
Both comic style books
Possibly Captain underpants too.

Tom Gates has been rejected. As has diary of a wimpy kid.

He did read all of captain underpants, and dog man, and really enjoyed those.

Haven’t heard of the 13 story tree house books so will have a look at those - thanks.

Re the library, we have been a few times but all of the fiction books have beast quest on the top shelf and he gets worried and walks away!

Try the Tom Palmer Football United series...my ds loved them.

WHSmith have quite a good selection of football books for kids on their website. I'll leave you to browse because I don't know all the titles well, but many are part of a series so if you hit on a good one you've got more to follow up with.

Hope that helps, will see if I can think of any others.

That's a shame about the library. My DS not long back so I asked him and he seconded 13storey treehouse. Also came up with Flat Stanley, the Wombles & Paddington (I forgot that he'd read all mine) and Charlie Fry which is also football based
