At what age does wrap around childcare finish?

My DD is only five so I know it's years away, I'm just interested really. Currently she's in breakfast club and after school care 3 days per week and will go to five days in the New Year. At her current provider none of the kids look older than ten but surely they still need childcare at eleven/twelve? Just to reiterate, I'm not considering leaving my child home alone Grin

Once they hit High-school I think there is nothing unless they join a club.

MissSueFlay · 23/11/2018 12:17

I would say up to the end of primary school. I know that DDs school encourages the Yr6s to travel to and from school independently in their last term, and some of those will be going home to an empty house where they'll have to sort out their own tea, homework etc.

Yes, high school, so 11 turning 12.

End of year 6. Same with most holiday clubs.

Year 7 is a tricky time, not quite old enough to be left but too old for childcare.

fruitpastille · 23/11/2018 12:19

I think most children don't use child care once they go to high school.

I suppose that makes sense, it's probably about the same time I was given a key and was sticking on a frozen pizza when I got home

Yeah, it seems to be end of Primary here. Which is fine - DS is in year 6 and we no longer use breakfast and after school club as he walks to and from school with friends. Once a week he's first home but only on his own for 45mins or so.
From secondary school I expect him to be doing clubs after school and then coming home for homework etc.

To be honest, it's the holiday childcare that is most worrying as that all seems to stop at 11 too! But I don't really want DS to be left to his own devices all holidays when he's in early secondary school.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 23/11/2018 12:22

Yep it stops when they go to secondary school, year 7 was a bit of a nightmare as dd hates being on her own tbh she still does (now year 8)

3boysandabump · 23/11/2018 12:22

End of primary school

NickyNora · 23/11/2018 12:25

What do parents do with 11/12 yr olds in the holidays?

twattymctwatterson · 23/11/2018 12:39

That was my next question Nicky. I don't have family that will be able to take her - although in fairness I've no idea what my life will look like in 6 years

I found an holiday club that takes until they are 13yo, there are pro coaching type courses that take older kids as well.

It's hard and expensive if you've not got family to help out.

Cedar03 · 23/11/2018 12:55

I use a holiday club that takes them as teens for a week in the summer. In previous years she's stayed with grandparents as well but that didn't work that well this year so we won't be repeating it next year.

Since starting secondary in September DD comes home after school and looks after herself for a couple of hours (normally less than this). Or she goes to a friend's house. I work from home a couple of days so I'm here when she gets back on those days. At her school most of the clubs run at lunchtime.

megletthesecond · 23/11/2018 13:00

Secondary school.

But DS's secondary school has homework club in the library before and after school 4 days a week. Plus extra cirricular sports / tech / art clubs 3 days a week. So while they can't be forced to stay there you should have the option of him being at school that little bit longer than school hours.

Heatherjayne1972 · 23/11/2018 14:05

Dreading next school year
My son will. Will be year 7 next September and has adhd - really can’t leave him unsupervised and yet there’s nothing available for him as all the holiday clubs here only do primary school age

vandrew4 · 23/11/2018 14:32

I;m a childminder and take kids up to any age. In fact all the CM's do. Bit intrigued as to what sort of childcare would ban over 11 year olds?

WeaselsRising · 23/11/2018 17:20

My DD is Y7 and because she has to get a bus to school and I walk to work, we get back at the same time.

All the holiday clubs round here take up to at least age 12, and several take up to 16. The residentials also take teens. Mine is going to be in holiday clubs for the foreseeable future.

fruitpastille · 23/11/2018 20:25

My ds could go to his childminder but he feels a bit old for it. He will go there if no other option though as he's not keen on being home alone.
