Bastard flu vacc

Nousernameforme · 22/11/2018 23:53

The amount of times I have heard of people getting ill after the flu vaccs. I still thought it would be a good idea for ds4 to have his at school today. He came home a bit sniffly went to bed a bit bunged up and has now woken up with full snottery coughing and wheezing going on.

He is so miserable and I feel like crap because I've done it to him.

It's really knocked my daughter around too. She is wheezy, coughing through the night and her lips are very swollen and sore. But I would take this over full blown flu any day.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 22/11/2018 23:58

My DC had it earlier in the week and not is full of cold, her lips look swollen (but I didn't think this might be because of the spray) and she has a rash (going to get it checked tomorrow)

Nousernameforme · 23/11/2018 00:10

How often do you get proper flu though? I've had it once in my life. Dp is the same. None of our dc have ever had it.
It isn't something like measles which was a very common disease before vaccines.

How often do you get proper flu though?

My 21 year son has been unlucky enough to have had it three times - at ages 2, 12 and 16. After the third time he was advised to have the flu jab annually so he does.

SavageBeauty73 · 23/11/2018 00:27

I had mine last Wednesday. Either a coincidence but I was so ill! And my arm was agony for 3 days.

IHeartKingThistle · 23/11/2018 00:32

I had proper flu in 2016 and 2017. I'm having the flu jab every year now! Having flu is so so awful.

The leaflet you get with the jab does say that it's unlikely to make you sick and that many people who get sick after the jab are actually incubating it before the jab IYSWIM.

Sorry your little one is feeling rubbish though.

Starlighting888 · 23/11/2018 00:33

My arm swelled up and was agony, I still have a horrible cold two weeks later never had any reaction before and being having it done for years!

Bunbunbunny · 23/11/2018 00:36

Real flu can & does kill, getting it once can screw up your immune system especially if you have asthma or diabetes. I think people say I feel fluy without having experienced real flu, and then it's seen on par with a cold. I hate the seasonal adverts for cold & flu remedies suggesting you can get back to work ASAP. You won't be doing that if you have flu!

My last bout was about 11 years ago & my DH had to get straws and hold the cup with my lemsip in to help me drink it as I couldn't lift my head off my pillow. I have never felt so weak in my life, I felt like I was covered in chains that I couldn't lift. The side affects to flu jab vary each year, one year I had a huge lump come up where I had the jab, one year I felt tired & run down. This year nothing, I would always have the jab over the flu as I have still remember that weakness vividly.

People have side affects to the jab but it can't give them flu, the problem with having it this time of year viruses, colds & flu are already being spread around. You could already be infected before having the jab then fall ill. I hope your DS is back to normal soon

DixieFlatline · 23/11/2018 00:36

I got the jab for the first time this year after catching a nasty strain of what I understand was Influenza B at work in Feb. Yet to feel unwell since. Hoping it protects me from at least one bout of illness I would otherwise have had this season.

Bunbunbunny · 23/11/2018 00:39

Sounds like your DS has a horrible cold, now that is something I would love a jab for! I can catch a cold from 100miles away!

MissConductUS · 23/11/2018 01:54

Well, except for the 500 million cases in 1918

1918 Pandemic

Or the Asian flu pandemic in the late 1950's that killed at least a million people. And there are more of course.

Influenza Pandemics

Are you seriously suggesting that widespread vaccination has increased the influenza disease burden?

Nousernameforme · 23/11/2018 08:04

No I was suggesting that it the flu vaccs doesn't have a job to play in eradicating flu its self. Flu mutates and there are so many strains so there is no herd immunity reason for getting it.

He doesn't have a horrible cold he has side effects from the vaccs

happypotamus · 23/11/2018 08:10

I think a lot of people feel that the flu vaccine makes them ill, because they come down with a nasty cold or similar just after having it, but probably they would have got the cold anyway because this is the time of year for a lot of nasty viruses. I had my flu jab yesterday, and I wouldn't be surprised if I feel ill in the next few days, but that is because DH has a cold/ man flu that he will probably give me and I work with people who have a range of respiratory viruses (sometimes we know which specific virus and sometimes we don't).
So, OP, you didn't 'do this to him' and make your DS ill by letting him have the vaccine. Schools are notoriously full of germs and he probably would have got it anyway. Hope he is feeling better soon.

Xmasbaby11 · 23/11/2018 08:16

I have the flu jab every year and the dc have the nasal spray. None of us have ever reacted and I don't know anyone who has, but even if we did, I'd still get us vaccinated. Colds are one thing and flu is another - if I can avoid it, I will.

Rinceoir · 23/11/2018 08:21

There’s a lot of myths about flu and flu vaccine. The vaccine doesn’t make you get the flu- colds are common this time of year so it’s not surprising you can get a cold at the same time. Flu doesn’t always make you very ill- it can in fact be a mild illness like a cold.

You can of course get side effects from vaccine but these are almost always mild and short lived.

I’m a healthcare provider and when swine flu hit some years ago I was working on the front line and unsurprisingly caught it before the vaccine was available. This was proven by swabs- I had a fever and headache for 24 hours and cold like symptoms for a few days and was fine.

The problem is that flu is unpredictable. Sometimes it’s very mild, other people get very ill- typically the old, very young, immunosuppressed and pregnant women but can inexplicably cause severe illness in young, healthy people too. Every year I see several people end up in intensive care with flu, and see elderly people die from pneumonia which is often a consequence of flu.

I get my vaccine every year, as does my child and my husband pays for it in the pharmacy.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 23/11/2018 08:22

Ds1 had the jab and was fine as was dh. I had the jab on Wednesday and came on with a cold on Wednesday night and my arm still hurts. Could be coincidence, who knows. I'd rather not get flu though so I'll continue getting the jab if I can. Mind you ds got flu last year even though he'd had the jab. I hope they've got the strains right this year.

Wolfiefan · 23/11/2018 08:23

You don’t know it’s a side effect for sure.
Even if it is the bastard flu is MUCH worse than what you describe. So better a cold type thing now than bed ridden and possibly worse.

Trills · 23/11/2018 08:25

Getting the vaccine is not just protecting you from flu, it's protecting everyone with a compromised immune system (elderly people, babies, people who are ill for other reasons).

If you're a youngish healthyish adult, there's a chance you might be infected with flu and not feel that bad (the £50 note thing is bollocks) and so be walking around spreading it on every bus and in every shop and in your office. You wouldn't think you'd "had flu" this year, but you'd have contributed to other people's illness, and not all of them would have reacted as mildly as you.

JellycatElfie · 23/11/2018 08:28

Isn’t the nasal spray a live vaccine though? So it can cause pretty nasty side effects?

redsummershoes · 23/11/2018 08:34

I had mine on monday and had no side effects at all.
if you are badly affected report it to the yellow card scheme

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 23/11/2018 08:42

I had mine yesterday and feel fine - no arm pain; no side effects.

Nousernameforme · 23/11/2018 08:50

I've spoken to a nurse and they said if it's gone within 2 days then it's likely a reaction if it drags on longer then it will have been a bug he was already incubating.
Nhs page says much the same. It's just a bit crap when he was healthy and full of beans yesterday before school and now is off school ill.

CondomsLubricantAndFlapjack · 23/11/2018 09:08

You aren't completely covered by the jab for about 3 weeks.

Also the pharmacist told me that if's free for certain groups because it can really exasperate their condition and hospitalize them.

Friendproblems · 23/11/2018 09:23

A lot of misinformation on this thread - the injected vaccine is dead and cannot give you flu/cold type symptoms (however since I had it I've been ill and my asthma has got really bad, it's happened so many times in the 23 years I've had it, that I'm unsure I believe the 'science' anymore.

The intra-nasal vaccine given to children is live, and although it's claimed it can't give you flu, it does shed, and is dangerous to those around the child who are immunocompromised.

The intra-nasal vaccine is also contraindicated for children who've been wheezy recently.

It's interesting that two separate people on this thread have reported that their children have swollen lips after the nasal spray.

The nasal spray has been withdrawn in America as it's seen as less effective than the dead injected vaccine.

Children are not vaccinated for their own sake, it's for herd immunity and to protect those who are most vulnerable to complications of flu (who would be eligible for the injected vaccine anyway). Children are little hot-houses of germs.

If it was for 'protection' then young, healthy adults/older children (those in Y6 are not given the spray - are they immune to flu?) would also be offered it, as in the case of the Spanish Flu, it was this group who were most affected (due to their own immune system being too aggressive and killing the victim along with the flu), they wouldn't be protected now.

www.infectiousdiseaseadvisor.com/influenza/increase-acute-respiratory-illness-risk-following-flu-vaccination-in-children/article/757695/

This question has been investigated by a number of researchers recently. .. as far as I can see, there is more work to be done here.

When the nasal vaccine was first introduced there were concerns around increased risks of respiratory illness in those under 3 and then under 2 and those with asthma. It does seem that there are enough adverse events being reported to mean there is still a question over whether the flu vaccine, by some unknown mechanism, increases susceptibility to upper respiratory issues.

There is also some reserach into whether there is some relationship with strep throat in those vaccinated and those around them.
