I really wish I hadn't entered and "won" this competition

It was my birthday and I was a bit tipsy. I looked on Facebook briefly and this competition came up for a "confidence building burlesque photo shoot". At that moment in time it sounded fun, and I knew someone who had had it done so I entered.

A couple of days later I got a phone call from a woman from the photo company saying I'd won. In my sober sensible state I wasn't at all surprised because that's how they find customers, but I still thought it might be fun. The woman asked for a £50 refundable deposit to secure the booking. She said to bring about 3 sets of underwear. Ok I thought, I'll go for it and see how it is. I went out that weekend and bought a couple of nice bra sets and a corset, which are all really nice and sexy so I'm glad about that.

I went along to the shoot and a young woman did my make up. I don't usually get things like this done, my hair and make up is usually kept really natural. When she had finished and I looked in the mirror I looked like a man in drag Sad I really didn't like it, my eyebrows were so dark and thick, it just wasn't me.

Then I went to the photo studio and to be honest I just felt awkward the whole time. The woman doing my photos called me a milf Hmm and kept making fun of my accent, which didn't really do much for my confidence. When the photo shoot was over she gave me the price list for buying photos at my viewing appointment, which is this weekend. Oh my God I could not believe the prices! I know that generally these things are expensive and I was prepared to part with about £200 for my photos on a USB perhaps. Boy was I wrong. They charge £400 just for one A3 framed photo. If I wanted an album with 30 photos it's £1295. If I wanted a USB stick with just 10 pictures it is £600! They do packages ranging from £1200 to £2100. That is crazy money and I can't afford anything like that, even with the pay monthly scheme. Christmas is coming and I have a family to buy presents for. Money isn't exactly tight, but it is still precious and I am not prepared to pay such an extortionate amount for photos of myself in my undies. Like I say, I would consider buying if they were more reasonably priced but I have better things to spend our hard earned money on, like a family holiday.

When I think about it, it's almost cruel what they do. It's like taking a child into a sweatshop and saying look at all these delicious sweeties, and here's 1p for you to spend.

I'm dreading going to the viewing as they will try to make me buy and there's just no way. I have to go along in order to get my £50 deposit back. I never envisaged anything like this when I entered the competition, and I really wish I hadn't bothered. They phoned me up today to confirm the viewing appointment and ask me what I was going to do with my photos, obviously presuming I'm going to buy. CFs.

I'll be a lot wiser in future and stay away from these so called competitions.

Forget the £50 and never go near them again.

HollowTalk · 22/11/2018 21:54

And when they talk to you on the phone, they have a script to make you feel guilty and buy something. Don't speak to them!

PetuliaBlavatsky · 22/11/2018 21:55

I agree it's manipulative. But there's no reason you have to buy anything. I'd turn up, look at the photos, say no thanks, pocket your £50 and leave. Don't feel pressured into buying anything, just say no. If you hated your hair and makeup anyway, it's not likely you'll be tempted to buy anything, is it?

AlexanderHamilton · 22/11/2018 21:56

Just don’t buy anything. Leave your purse and bank details at home.

It’s a scam.

myhousesmellsofIKEA · 22/11/2018 21:56

It’s worth £50 to just not turn up.

Moltenpink · 22/11/2018 21:56

If you don’t buy anything, they will keep reducing the price so hold out!

Scarydinosaurs · 22/11/2018 21:57

I wouldn’t bother going to the viewing, it sounds like you probably won’t like the photos anyway.

I’m sorry you had this shitty experience. It shouldn’t be like this. Maybe your friend could suggest someone that she used?

I'm sorry but that was not a genuine competition win. If it was a real prize it wouldn't cost you anything.
You have been tricked into doing the photo shoot and now they want you to spend lots of money on the photos.
If you can take someone with you to get your £50 back but point blank decline to buy. The prices are ridiculous.

MaryofMislethwaiteManor · 22/11/2018 21:59

Well, you ‘won’ a scam, therekl be lots more who have ‘won’ too.

Why would you consider buying the pictures if you didn’t like the way you looked in them? Surely you’d just shove them under the bed and never look at them Confused

Kittykat93 · 22/11/2018 21:59

Those prices are ridiculous. What a shit 'prize' to win!!

I would go along but only to get my money back. Before I could even see the photos I'd just explain that I hadn't realised how expensive the photos were going to be and I wouldn't be buying any.

Quarky · 22/11/2018 22:02

I did think about not going back and forgetting the £50 but I could really use that money to buy my DD a pair of winter boots.

I was naive, I know that now. Im just going to go, say no thanks and get my money back. I just hate confrontation but when I'm pissed off I can be really stern.

Go get your deposit back, tell them you don't like the photos and leave. It might be easier if you take someone with you.

Quarky · 22/11/2018 22:04

I just really wanted to get other people's thoughts on this whole thing.

OP posts:
ShodAndShadySenators · 22/11/2018 22:06

Just go to get your deposit back. They can't force you to buy the photos. You didn't even like how you looked in them, so even if they were £1 each you wouldn't actually want them, would you?!

Take a mate with you if you need to, someone you can rely on to repeat, "No she doesn't want to buy any" to back you up if you need it.

Sitranced · 22/11/2018 22:08

These photoshoot competition scams have been around for years. I almost got stung by one years ago, they lure you in with a 'winning freebie photoshoot' but try to charge extortionate prices for the prints. The company I got trapped by tried to stop me from leaving the premises because I hadn't bought anything but soon got out of my way when I mentioned the police for trying to hold me against my will. I googled it when I got home and found there are hundreds of these companies who use the same tactics Angry

Quarky · 22/11/2018 22:09

DH is coming with me.

OP posts:
Pollaidh · 22/11/2018 22:14

It's a scam unfortunately. Glad to see you're taking DH with you.

Notatallobvious · 22/11/2018 22:16

Have you read the small print? When it says refundable deposit it could mean that they deduct it from any purchases you make...but if you don't buy any you forfeit the deposit.

SundayGirls · 22/11/2018 22:16

Just don't buy anything. Get your £50 back. Get DH to take pics of you in your new underwear instead!

Cherrysherbet · 22/11/2018 22:16

Just go and get your money back. It’s an absolute con, and you need to be strong and not give them a penny. Good luck.

MaryofMislethwaiteManor · 22/11/2018 22:17

Sorry OP but I’m not overly optimistic you’d get that deposit back anyway.

Echobelly · 22/11/2018 22:18

Yes, it's the old scam. They used to just call them 'glamorous' photos and caked you in makeup and put a soft filter on everything! A family friend had this done about 30 years ago and I still remember her describing them as putting so much eyeliner on that her eyes 'looked like piss-holes in the snow' Grin She was pretty forthright and told them in no uncertain terms she wasn't spending hundreds on the photos!

You live and learn, I guess. Good luck getting deposit back.

UpstartCrow · 22/11/2018 22:18

Quarky Have you talked to Trading Standards? Its such a con, there was never a competition.

HollowTalk · 22/11/2018 22:18

OK so your DH can say, "I've taken much better ones than that. I don't like them. She doesn't like them. Give us the £50 deposit back now, please." And say nothing more until it's repaid.
