My son is almost 2 and a half, he had about 15/20 words he can say. We have been to a speech therapy drop in clinic who gave us some tips and things to try. These haven't really made a difference to his speech and he's getting so frustrated and we're having lots of tantrums because he cannot verbalise what he wants/needs etc. The health visitor won't refer us to speech therapy as apparently there's 'no point' .. in just at a loss of how to help him, does anyone have any ideas of what to try with him? Just to confirm he fully understands everything I say, instructions etc

Have a look around the Talking Point website.
They give you tips, strategies, ideas, and there is a service where you can speak to a Speech and Language Therapist for advice.

I would take the HV's response of not referring you as "there's no point" further - talk to her managers, or google the SaLT services in your area and ask them how to get referred.

Your local CC would be another place to make enquiries. Our local ones have just appointed 'Language through Play' workers. Without them though they will know what the situation is for services in your local area.

Hi - my son had speech delay - he ended up going to a nursery where they had an I CAN service - there may be one in your area?

www.ican.org.uk

Or they may be able to give you some advice on what you can do to help him - you can contact them for help.

My DS didn't get speech therapy until he was four - to be honest i am not sure that he would have had the understanding to do what was needed before then.

Good luck - i know how worrying and frustrating it is.
