Would people notice if you lost 5lbs in weight? ( assuming you’re not very overweight to begin with )

Just that really.

I’m probably about a stone overweight & I’ve managed to lose 5lbs in the last few weeks but I don’t really look any different?

No, I doubt anybody would spot that on me.

GrubbyHipsterBeard · 22/11/2018 08:48

I think so, if they hadn’t seen you since you started losing weight. If someone was seeing you every day in that time not so much.

Congratulations, losing 5lb is great!

Do you take progress pics? Or have a dress or something you can use as a marker of progress?

junebirthdaygirl · 22/11/2018 08:50

I find l need to lose at least 8 lbs before anyone notices. But remember most people won't comment. I have seen colleagues noticably lose weight but didn't comment as l would never comment if they gained.
One did say to me after l lost a stone..l hope you don't mind me saying this but have you lost weight.
You will feel better yourself though.

elizabethdraper · 22/11/2018 08:55

I have lost 14 pound and not one person has notice dBlush

FitzChivalryFarseer · 22/11/2018 08:55

Doubt it. I have lost that recently and no one has spotted it. And I am under 9 st, so it is a reasonable proportion of my overall weight.

RoseMartha · 22/11/2018 08:56

Well done, do you feel better in yourself? If yes then that is even better. Keep going you will reach your target soon.

I dont think it is noticeable on average weight person.

(I am on bottom end of bmi so anytime i lose any it gets commented on in a negative way which is not helpful as i find stress triggers me losing it without meaning to).

Mumsnut · 22/11/2018 08:57

I've lost 10lbs in the last month. No-one has commented. I can tell though - clothes fit better and hang better.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 22/11/2018 08:58

I have read this somewhere:

Lose half a stone and you'll notice.
Lose a stone and other people will notice.

Obviously that isn't borne out by this thread! But I guess people look at you less than you look at yourself (critically, that is), so you'll notice before others do.

TweedAddict · 22/11/2018 09:01

I had to lose at least a stone for people to notice

surferjet · 22/11/2018 09:02

Thanks all Smile
I definitely feel better in myself & it’s a great motivation to hit my goal of losing a stone.
My size 14 waistbands were starting to hurt so I knew it was time to lose those pounds!

I recently lost weight. People start noticing at just under a stone.

MysweetAudrina · 22/11/2018 09:06

Why would it matter if other people noticed and surely they wouldn't comment on your weight. I would hate it I put on 5lbs and someone commented and would never comment directly on someones weight. I might tell them they are looking well but that is normally because when people start to eat better and exercise more they do look better as it has a bettering effect on your overall appearance. People often feel better so they buy better fitting clothes or get their hair done and I would always comment if I thought someone looked well but not specifically in relation to their weight,

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 22/11/2018 09:06

I’ve lost half a stone in the last few weeks and no-one has noticed. I still have about another stone to go. I am pretty sure that people who know me well (I.e. people who actually pay attention - not just folk I say hi to in the school playground) will notice when I get back down to my goal weight, but I know from experience that I really need to lose at least a stone - realistically a stone and a half, or 2 stone before anyone really notices. (Serial dieter - the same 20lb every time Hmm)

Also - at this time of year when we’re all wearing thicker jumpers and coats etc it’s less noticeable. I am certain if you were losing in the summer when you were in thinner dresses and tops it would be more noticeable quicker.

fantasmasgoria1 · 22/11/2018 09:07

Yes my fiancé would probably notice!

Oblomov18 · 22/11/2018 09:09

No. I don't think that many people do notice. Or would notice.
A stone? Yes. But probably not less.

SoyDora · 22/11/2018 09:09

I’m a size 10-12 (when not massively pregnant) and no, I don’t think anyone would notice if I lost 5lbs. It would take about 10lbs for people to notice.

BitchyChuckle · 22/11/2018 09:09

People will have noticed but no one these days are sure whether commenting on it is allowed - after all it’s considered rude if you ask someone if they’ve put on weight

Bigonesmallone3 · 22/11/2018 09:10

Iv recently lost 5lb in my first trimester and I was just over 9st to begin with, no one noticed.. maybe the fact that it's winter and we r all wrapped up makes a difference

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 22/11/2018 09:11

I also think if you’re thinner to begin with then it’s more noticeable. I wasn’t actually technically overweight - just heavier than I was comfortable with and at the top of the healthy bmi range. I would imagine if I had started at the mid-low point of healthy bmi and lost half a stone it would be more obvious.

As well as that - the times I have had most people commenting on how I look (yes, people shouldn’t - but they do) was when I was working out alongside dieting. Running (which is my go to exercise) takes a couple of months before anyone would notice a difference in my body, but when I was doing Davina workouts you could definitely tell within a month - it was the toning that made the difference, not the actual weight loss

museumum · 22/11/2018 09:23

Nope. Not a chance. I’ve lost twice that and only my dh has noticed. It means they probably also didn’t notice you carrying the extra. People don’t actually look as closely at us as we fear.

TheWiseWomansFear · 22/11/2018 09:26

A little, my boyfriend and my mum maybe. I don't think others would notice until at least half a stone

WhyDidIEatThat · 22/11/2018 09:32

Someone said I’d lost weight the other day, just checked and I’m down 2kg - that’s about 5lbs isn’t it? I don’t look any different tho 🤔

taratill · 22/11/2018 09:50

I've lost over a stone since August and no one has noticed! I can tell in my face and in my clothes.

MattMagnolia · 22/11/2018 18:59

I lost over three stone by fasting two days each week over fifteen months. Not one person said anything or appeared to notice. I wondered if they thought I was ill and didn’t like to ask.

LostInLeics · 22/11/2018 19:05

I've lost 2 1/2 stone since the summer and no one has said anything. It just goes to show that most people are too wrapped up in their own lives to really notice what's going on with other people.
