Artificial, and I don’t hang any decorations around the bottom.
I have a Shih Tzu and he emerged last year from under the real tree covered in pines, he was constantly sniffing at it and wouldn’t leave it alone.
I have a four year old with Autism who doesn’t bother touching the tree, the dog however is a grade A arsehole.

With a pup? Neither

TeeBee · 22/11/2018 08:14

I've always had real. My dogs never shown the slightest bit of interest in it.

We have both in different rooms. No issues, although I don't use any glass baubles just in case.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 22/11/2018 08:25

Real.

One year DD went to get a chocolate off the tree and found just the silver foil... DDog had managed to jump up and suck the chocolate out. We were horrified, especially as she was supposed to be allergic. DDog was fine, but DD was upset.

She's dead now Sad

Our new dog is a shih tzu cross and a nightmare, so I'm worried [but we'll still get a real tree because I love them. We might not put presents underneath though, or she'll chew them all!]

KipperTheFrog · 22/11/2018 08:28

Real trees here. DDog sniffs it when it first arrives then leaves it alone. the toddler will be a different matter this year though

NetballHoop · 22/11/2018 08:31

DDog has never shown the slightest bit of interest in the tree. The first year we put it up with no decorations for a few days just to see how he'd react but it was fine.

JaimeLannister · 22/11/2018 08:33

Artificial. And I don't put chocolates on it.

TillyVonMilly · 22/11/2018 08:58

Real tree, we’ve got two dogs. The oldest one has never been interested, the younger one used to nose some of the baubles but that’s all. We will need to watch the oldest this time though, his eyesight is poor now, he especially struggles in lowlight so it will be easy for him to bump in to it.

GooodMythicalMorning · 22/11/2018 09:00

We had real last year but only a small one which we placed higher up so he couldnt get it.

DramaAlpaca · 22/11/2018 09:02

Real. The dogs aren't interested. The cat, on the other hand...

Monkeybunkey · 22/11/2018 09:03

Artificial, on top of the tumble dryer in the conservatory which only goes up when I finish work for Christmas so the dog isn't left alone with it! No glass baubles and no chocolates on it just in case.

MamaLovesMango · 22/11/2018 09:11

Real. She’s 4 now but was fine when she was a pup. Totally not interested. We don’t put chocolate on the tree though just in case she can’t control herself which bizarrely is becoming more the case as she gets older.....gets away with murder

CantWaitToRetire · 22/11/2018 09:16

Artificial, but that's because my DH doesn't like real trees much. If your dog is still a pup then I'd make sure the tree can be closed off from the dog's reach when you're not around. When I had my previous dog, we'd both gone to work and my husband came home to find the tree toppled over and a whole giant tube of smarties (which I'd placed high up on the tree) all eaten! Fortunately no harm done to the dog but I was worried about her.

Blobby10 · 22/11/2018 09:38

Always had real trees and dogs never touched them. Didn't put baubles on the bottom most branches as found that waggy tails knocked them off! Didn't put chocolates on either or I would have scoffed them Grin

The tree was in the living room which the dogs weren't allowed into unless we were there so door usually shut.

Rio18 · 22/11/2018 09:54

I've had both with my dogs.

They're pretty good at leaving the tree alone (unlike cats).

I can't put any of their presents under though, because they sniff them out and then there's carnage.

TowerRingInferno · 22/11/2018 10:41

Real. My dogs have never been interested in the tree, other than one spaniel who used to use the base as a water bowl (never knocked it over though). Even when they bounce around and playfight the tree has been fine. I wouldn’t put anything edible underneath though!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 22/11/2018 10:49

Real one.

One of the dogs barks at it for a bit, but very half heartedly, I suspect he thinks he ought to, for some reason, but it all settles.

The other one doesn't like it because he likes his toys in the place where the tree goes, but he's used to that as well.

Unicornandbows · 22/11/2018 10:50

My fluff doesn't care so I don't have to worry about it yaay

Ecofluffynanny · 22/11/2018 11:27

My dog passed away this year aged 6, but I've always had a real tree. She never really bothered with it (apart from her huge bum and waggy tail knocking everything off, but that would have been the same with a fake one!) To be honest, it never even occurred to me to question it 🤷‍♀️ Real trees are heavier, so would be sturdier and less prone to getting knocked over by a rambunctious pup 😂 I vacuumed daily to ensure needles were not an issue (tended to go for a tree that didn't shed as much, although of course you'd always get some dropping!)
