When I was a kid, we used to play pretend games based on tv shows and comics. Do kids still do that?

I'm a child of the 60s and our play times were full of games of the Avengers and the Champions, Captain Scarlet and such. Do kids, in these days of playstations and Fortnite still do that?

Mine do age 6 and 9. Depends on the child I suppose.

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 21/11/2018 18:58

Yes. Constantly.

parrotonmyshoulder · 21/11/2018 18:59

Yes.
My two have played Octonauts, Paw Patrol and Hey Duggee for years.
Aren’t you aware of the Disney costumes that nearly every child seems to own?

DD now plays Harry Potter, Famous Five and boarding school.

DS is a Power Ranger.

I’m a primary school teacher. Answer is yes.

Pebblesandfriends · 21/11/2018 19:00

All the time. They started doing this age 2-3 and are still going, oldest 7.

ShowOfHands · 21/11/2018 19:00

All the flipping time.

gamerwidow · 21/11/2018 19:02

Yes DD and her friends often pretend to be characters from film and TV shows like the Descendants or Adventure Time but current favourites for playground play at DDs school are Granny, Hello Neighbour and Fortnite which are all computer games.

SueGeneris · 21/11/2018 19:02

Yes. Mine also play all those sorts of imaginary games but using the context and characters from video games. They still play the same way just with characters from their generation. Even my year 6 DS whole class will still get stuck into a good old fashioned game of tag at playtime!

DeathMetalMum · 21/11/2018 19:04

All the time. Dd's are usually playing either Pokemon where one of them is the trainer and the other is the Pokemon or power rangers.

Twatforahat · 21/11/2018 19:06

Mine play PJ Masks.

SparkyBlue · 21/11/2018 19:17

Yes my DD and her friends do this all the time.

elliejjtiny · 21/11/2018 19:19

Mine all do this, youngest is 4 and eldest is 12.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 21/11/2018 19:20

They play PJ Masks and Paw Patrol at DDs Nursery

DD also likes to pretend she's Peppa Pig

Hermagsjesty · 21/11/2018 19:22

Mine are 7 and 4 and do this constantly.

Papewrath · 21/11/2018 19:32

Mine play Zelda in the garden/playground. I get to be the princess (so I can sit in my castle and shout encouragement from afar Wink ) and DS is either turned into a monster at the top of a climbing frame or is DD's horse Grin

They also play Star Wars. Which can be rather tedious on a 4 hr hike...

DS's train playing has strong similarities to Thomas even though he hasn't watched it for years. And his fire train crew are Sam and Penny.

BevBrook · 21/11/2018 19:34

We used to play Battle of the Planets. With coats as capes.
And yes, they do. Harry Potter, Pokemon (so much Pokemon), Star Wars.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 21/11/2018 19:38

We played Dr Who and Space Sentinels. (70s child here) Also the Famous Five, but refused to be Anne as she was a drip.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 21/11/2018 19:39

Yes. DS plays Avengers (marvel) Stat Wars and Batman. Also Dr Who. And now internet has taken hold so Fortnite and Hello Neighbour.

GinghamStyle · 21/11/2018 19:41

My year 6 DS is always playing games like this. The favourite at school at he moment is playing Fortnite but at least that means they’re running around a lot!

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway · 21/11/2018 19:48

My sister and I always used to pretend to be presenting that show that aired on Saturday mornings in the early 80s - think it was called 'Why don't you'? it had a theme tune that went 'switch off your tv set and go and do something more interesting instead'. Does anyone else remember it?

hazeyjane · 21/11/2018 19:49

Lots of the children at the preschool I work at do (mostly paw patrol, PJ Masks, Power Rangers and Miraculous) Ds would fight as Black Panther all day if he could (sounds like black panda when he says it!)

Bugbeau · 21/11/2018 20:45

Yes, my son (nearly 7) plays Harry Potter, Clone Wars, Pokemon or Ninjago every day at school. Am also a teacher and all children from Reception to Year 4 play games like this.

graysor · 21/11/2018 21:03

Yep. Dd is nearly 3 and she spends most of her time being Peppa/ George, Marshall or Skye from paw patrol or pj masks. With an occasional dip into being peter or lily rabbit. And as a result I spend a lot of the time being mummy pig or Ryder or Mrs rabbit.

Cuzcothellama · 21/11/2018 22:09

Oh yes. It's Harry Potter in this house. Or going-on-holiday.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 22/11/2018 06:34

It's lovely to think that kids are still being imaginative in play. Mine are all grown and I work in secondary, so I'm a bit out of touch with that age.
My favourite memory was my dtwins playing batman and joker. I expected to hear them have some convoluted fight scene going on- not quite. "Batman, what do you want to drink? I'd like tea please joker. Can we have biscuits and little sandwiches like mummy makes?" Aww.
