Do you own many cd’s and dvd’s? Do you ever use them??

We’re moving house soon and I keep staring at my shelves of cds and dvds. I have pared them down so I know it’s only films I love (plus kids films) and all music I love..... but I never watch dvds! I’d happily watch any of these films if they cam in the tv but I wouldn’t actively go and put the dvd on. And I don’t even own a CD player any more, I would have to play them on my laptop. I just can’t seem to bring myself to get rid of them. Does anyone else have vast unused collections they’re hanging on to for no real reason?

No, I had a clear out a couple of years ago and they went to a charity shop. We do watch DVDs in the caravan though but only have space for a few there.

MongerTruffle · 21/11/2018 17:12

I have a huge collection of my favourite films on Blu-Ray (or DVD, where there is no Blu-Ray version). The only real reason for it is that it's nice to have. I watch one once a month, at most (except in November and December when the Christmas films come out).

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 21/11/2018 17:13

I gave all mine to charity about 3 years ago except for a handful of kids dd's.

DH has got 6 big cardboard boxes full from when we moved here 5 YEARS ago, drives me mad, he insists he'll listen to them but won't and they're taking up room inn the garage.

formerbabe · 21/11/2018 17:51

Loads of dvds...we don't even have a dvd player anymore! I'm slowly chucking them

thedevilinablackdress · 21/11/2018 17:55

Yes and yes but I don't have any music or TV streaming subscription type things.
DVDs are mainly TV box sets that I get in charity shops 😀

Odiepants · 21/11/2018 17:57

Kids DVDs get watched lots, other DVDs not really.

I tried to get DH to get rid of the CDs last year and he wouldn't. We then had a day when the cable was down for.maintenance and he was smug because there was no TV, no Wi-Fi and only the radio or his CDs!

Annandale · 21/11/2018 17:58

Yes. Tbh why not buy a cheap cd player 2nd hand and see if you start listening to them? If you've got nothing to play them on you're not being fair to them...

ScreamingValenta · 21/11/2018 17:59

Loads, and regularly watched/listened to. I don't use streaming services or have any kind of tv package.

Bloodybridget · 21/11/2018 18:00

I only listen to music on CDs or on the radio - I have maybe 200 CDs. Only a few DVDs, never really got into the habit of them, although it is nice to be able to watch a favourite film, I guess.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 21/11/2018 18:01

I got rid of all my CDs a couple of years ago. Anything that I really like I just bought again on iTunes.

I still have a lot of DVDs and really I should get rid of them, maybe in another couple of years.

OutPinked · 21/11/2018 18:06

I got rid of most of ours ages ago since we watch everything online now and I hated the clutter.

Rockbird · 21/11/2018 18:09

Boxes and boxes of them. I ripped all my favourites so don't need the dvds or cds anymore. Just haven't got round to getting rid yet.

kenandbarbie · 21/11/2018 18:10

I don't have a dvd or CD player anymore so no.

Bath9000 · 21/11/2018 18:10

None now, got rid of them all when we moved house a couple of years ago. We stream or download everything.

happypotamus · 21/11/2018 18:12

I am in a huge minority, but I still buy CDs. I listen to them in the car, have a CD player upstairs though to be honest I rarely use that, and play them on the computer. I listen to most of my music on youtube now that we don't pay for spotify/ tidal anymore, but I would feel bad doing that all the time without having paid for the music in some form first.

Mumberjack · 21/11/2018 18:14

We decluttered our CD collection recently. Still wanted to keep some as car has CD player and don’t want to constantly use phone data or battery by using spotify etc while driving.
We sold a load through Music Magpie but they didn’t accept a few. Their warehouses must already be filled with Joss Stone and Newton Faulkner Grin

frogface69 · 21/11/2018 18:17

Yes, lots and lots. Bought from charity shops in the main. I also listen to tapes on my portable player. I don't have a TV package or anything.

Wingbing · 21/11/2018 18:18

None, all gone.

Nothing to play them in either. We have Spotify, amazon music & Echo, and a memory stick in the tv for films. Netflix and sky q take care of the rest.

The car has a USB port for music so no cds in the car either.

Nice to clear them out so it is just books on shelves now. Much nicer.

theboxofdelights · 21/11/2018 18:21

Loads of dvds (well maybe 100) and we watch one most weeks. We now buy films on amazon, apple or watch on Netflix but I wouldn’t pay to watch something I already have.

CDs no, we copied them all into iTunes years ago.

NigelGresley · 21/11/2018 18:24

I wonder whether the internet has an unlimited capacity to support the worlds population streaming films and music, or whether it’s going to fall over at some point.

This is what is making me reluctant to part with CDs and DVDs 😁
Then again if that does happen, I suspect we’ll have more to worry about and not much care for sitting about watching old films 🤪

NigelGresley · 21/11/2018 18:26

Also, I still like to put a CD on and flick through the tracks while following the lyrics included on the insert.

I have loads of dvds and still buy them if I see a film I like in the charity shops as nice and cheap. I watch them while working I work from home so I'm here all day and tend to run out of things to watch on Netflixs etc. I also have cds and vinyl records which I listen to occasionally but that's because I'd rather have a film on in the background.

Tigresswoods · 21/11/2018 18:37

I'm fascinated by this. We all used to collect so many CDs & DVDs & proudly show them off in our living rooms! Now there's just no need. Anyway all our CDs were banished to the loft sometime ago. The DVDs were largely sold & we kept a handful of favourites. They were also banished to the loft & have not come back down.

Our PS4 can play DVDs if needed but we probably only watch on there occasionally & usually a kids film.
