Cradle cap help

fraggle84 · 21/11/2018 14:53

Dd has always had cradle cap as a baby. It seemed to settle down when she was 2

She's now 4 and I've just noticed a few flakes in her scalp and when looking more there quite a lot of it on her scalp

Is there anything we can do to help get rid of it?

At the moment we use shampoo & conditioner once a week, the L'Oréal kids ones and after swimming mid week we also use a 2 in 1 on her in the showers

My dd2 still gets it at 11. I put conditioner and rub into scalp leave for 10/15 minutes and then use a nittygritty comb to gently lift off

StorminaBcup · 21/11/2018 15:06

Was also going to say some oil and the nitty gritty comb. My two yr Old picked up nits and the shampoo / comb worked wonders. His scalp's been clear ever since!

Olive oil on her scalp will help. She may be sensitive to sodium lauryl sulphate which is found in lots of products, so you you could try a shampoo that is SLS free.

I don't want to pick at it as it can get infected and I think it really upset her

Is something like the child's farm sensitive shampoo the right thing to stop it irritating her?

Have you tried dentinox cradle cap shampoo? That works in my baby. I wouldn't use L'Oréal either. Probably best to use a sensitive shampoo so you know there's nothing irritating the scalp. Child's farm is good!

MyKingdomForBrie · 21/11/2018 15:22

Exactly what @Clutterbugsmum said. I've read that you shouldn't use olive oil.

weallhavedreams · 21/11/2018 15:23

My little man (nearly 4) has always suffered badly. Like a second thick skin all over his head. We tried everything. Then one night I plastered his head in coconut oil and left for 3 hours. Combed and then washed off. ALL of it was gone. I was pretty shocked and sad that I hadnt tried it earlier.

A few flakes are coming back so will repeat at the weekend but it's been 4 months of nothing apart from that!

anniehm · 21/11/2018 15:30

We did the oil and scrape that worked, came back over months. After around 3 it was much reduced. Still has issues now (adult) but it's stress induced

liquidrevolution · 21/11/2018 15:57

I had to buy dentinox last month for my 4 year old. We were using a detangling spray after washing and I think it built up too much. Since it went we stopped using the spray and it seems to have cleared.

ShockedHorrored · 21/11/2018 16:00

Coconut oil. Give head a good scrub with wet flannel. Shampoo and rinse. Worked for my son when his cradle came back at 4.

nowifi · 21/11/2018 16:44

My nearly 3 year old has it and won't let me anywhere near it Confused I'm sure nursery must think I'm not washing her Grin

NotCitrus · 21/11/2018 16:59

Dentinox shampoo. After a few washes it went, and then would stay away for a year or so.

Amara123 · 21/11/2018 17:03

Vaseline and it'll go. I tried coconut oil and olive oil and they seemed to make it worse.

nastyhoneybadger · 21/11/2018 18:05

My DS has had it on and off since he was a little baby. Every few months I rub a bit of coconut oil on his scalp and comb it through and then shampoo it off. He's got quite sensitive skin in general but we've found the kids range by Green People doesn't irritate him too much. Their stuff isn't cheap but lasts ages and there's usually an offer online.
I try not to pick at the scaly bits because lumps of hair come off too Shock

Smurfybubbles · 21/11/2018 18:13

Dentinox crafle cap shampoo was the only thing that cleared my DS's!

I found the above link useful when reading up for my child with the same problem. We found La Roche Posay Kerium shampoo was brilliant for our 8 year old. Then a conditioner free from sulphates etc. Kind Natured range is good.

rebelrosie12 · 21/11/2018 19:36

Load up her scalp with olive oil. Let it sit for 30 mins. Wash out x2 and comb through. So satisfying:D

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 21/11/2018 21:36

Nothing in particular made it go away for DS; he just grew out of it eventually (I think at around 7 or so?).

I agree that nit comb / nit treatment is good for clearing it all out temporarily.

Doboopedoo · 21/11/2018 22:06

Does the hair come away too when you do coconut oil/Vaseline? 3 year old DD has weak, fine hair and would love to sort her cradle cap but domt want to leave her bald on top!

deste · 21/11/2018 23:16

My GD had it, I put shampoo on her dry head, got her soft brush and gently brushed her scalp in a circular movement. I then washed it off and rinsed it. I did gently scrape it off but have continued with the same treatment and she hasnt has it again.
