Possible ankle break - advice

Lemond1fficult · 21/11/2018 10:06

My DP has just called me from a train to the airport. He's badly sprained his ankle (there was an audible 'pop') and may have broken it, so an X-ray would be sensible.

Should he:

Go to the nearest A&E (in Luton, we live in South London)

Get home and go to our local A&E

Get home and ring his GP for an X-ray form and go to the hospital

Ring 111.

Thanks! No idea what's the best course of action.

Local a+e. I broke mine at a feature. At John's said it was a sprain. Got home my mum took one look and sent me a+e. 3 months later the plaster came off. Nearly had an op.
Currently on crutches with a sprained knew. Went my local a+e not the one in the city i hurt myself

Should be the closest one to him, as walking on it can be really bad if there is severe damage

How much walking is he having to do? If it's broken then he can damage it more by walking on it unsupported.

We went through this in August when my husband broke his ankle. He could weight bear so we assumed a sprain, and he just did RICE for two days. When he eventually went to hospital he had a Webber B fracture of the lateral malleolus and was told he had put himself at risk of further damage and surgery by walking on it.
He ended up an airboot for 6 weeks.

With an ankle I would get to the nearest a and e with as little weight bearing as possible

Local a and e to make sure it's not broken,

Go to the dept closest to where you live - if it is broken he will need follow up & this is100X easier to arrange when at your local hospital.
Most poping sounds are caused by tendons. For a bone to break with enough force to cause a pop would usually result in a clear deformity
Good luck

The issue is that he's still going to the airport to hand over the work to his colleague. Obviously I think he should jump in the first cab he sees, straight to A&E but of course he won't leave his colleague in the lurch.

Hmmm. Thanks for the advice everyone - seems A&E asap is the consensus

Well his a grown man and will do something against advice so nothing you can do....

If he heard an audible pop it might be an (Achilles') tendon rupture rather than a break. When mine ruptured I heard a big pop and went straight to my nearest a&e by cab. If he can walk on it it might be a partial tear but walking on it could make it so much worse.
