Dc have been asked to do a 5 min presentation on anything they like. They are a quiet, shy child who struggles speaking up in class anyway. Totally like a rabbit in the headlights with all this, but wants to ‘wow’ the crowd!!!
Any suggestions for an interesting topic?

My dd had to do this in primary 1 when she was just 4, most kids talked about their favourite toy or a pet, dd talked about her teddy and we printed pics off of her teddy in different places which were a good prompt. Pick something they love and they will be able to talk for ages and answer questions.
Its such a fab skill to learn and getting them started early is great!

Could talk about

A holiday
A game he/she enjoys and the rules etc
Fave football team
Recent meal out or trip somewhere
Pet (with pictures)

Something with lots of props. For example if your DC goes to dance classes maybe show dance costumes, if they do gymnastics maybe certificates or medals, that kind of thing. It’s basically show and tell. They could take in a box with some of their favourite things in and show them and talk about where they were from. Don’t focus too much on the 5 mins thing. I’m sure the teacher won’t be timing them.

Both of my kids would have hated this. 😬

Does he collect anything ? He could take those in and talk about them. Or does he like space, it would be easy to fill 5 minutes about the planets and he could maybe make a model or something to take in.

DS in year 2 had to do this last week... he talked about his sister!! He got quite upset when I told him that no dd (13) could not have time off school to come in and be used in his talk and he'd have to settle for photos instead!!

That's so sweet !

Yes I really wouldn’t worry about the 5 minutes. Just having the guts to get up there and talk will be the main thing. lists love that!!

anniehm · 20/11/2018 21:04

My dd did this at age 8, she surprised her teacher (and us) by talking about how it's important to be inclusive and that children with asd are just like them - she has asd but we had never talked to her about it, (she was diagnosed at 2).

But most didn't do such heavy topics, favourite things were popular, as was last holiday.

PunkAssMoFo · 20/11/2018 22:05

Lists, that’s lovely.

Unfortunately the kids who have preceded have raised the bar- historical events and scientific/engineering stuff etc. Most of dc’s extra curricular stuff is done with classmates, so there’s nothing ‘new’ to share there. DC is desperate to impress Hmm

What about a place you have visited, could be in this country or abroad. Take in food from there to share.

Or give a demo of a science experiment and explain how it works - coke and menthos, candle jar and sucking up water thing, icecream from salt and ice, oilcoloured water and alka seltzer.

DDs stepson did one on Meercats using PowerPoint. He put up a few facts, figures and photos which he spoke about and then at the end put on a photo of the most famous Meerkat ever and inserted a clip of a Disney film showing the Meercat. At the end with the music playing he off his own back did the Floss in time to the music. The teacher said he had raised the bar and got a certificate of excellence. He was 6 and a half.

PunkAssMoFo · 21/11/2018 07:18

Deste, that sounds amazing! Something along those lines might be the way forward.

Could you prep a science experiment? Do a chat about volcanos and then do the baking soda and vinegar bit? It's quite exciting but easy to do. Im sure here is a go jetters clip about volcanoes too!

Oh sorry @Squizzard. That'll teach me to read the full thread!

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 21/11/2018 11:04

A variation on the above would be to present a favourite recipe using powerpoint with pics of the various stages plus instructions that DS can simply read if he gets flustered.

The most important part would be to bring in the finished product to offer round. That would win his classmates - and teacher - over.
