Where should we visit for a UK wide camper van trip?

Looking to plan a 3-4 week camper van trip next summer seeing some best bits of the uk. Will have 2 DCs aged 5 and 4. We could be asking for trouble but it’s a bit of a dream for me Grin

So where should we visit? My main wish is to see the most gorgeous places in the UK but aware need to throw in some other fun stuff for kids!

We are in south east and I want to travel up one coast and back down the other (broadly)

Would love your tips for absolute gems to see!

Llandudno and snowdonia for definite. On the other coast Scarborough or Whitby are worth a visit.

Fab, thank you @rarfy. I’ve seen a little bit of Wales and very keen to explore more. It looks stunning!

Do the North Coast 500 in Scotland, it's fantastic.

Make a stop on the north Norfolk coast (think Cromer, Sherringham, Hunstanton etc...) via a couple of nights in the Norfolk Broads. While you're in the area, make sure you don't miss Bewilderwood for your DC!

@judy just had a quick look at the website-wow!! Hadn’t heard of that, looks incredible! Thanks. @rice thank you for the kids tip, will google now!

North Norfolk, North Coast 500 in Scotland, Lake district, North wales & Snowdonia, Cornish coast, Jurassic coast & all the forests dotted in between as most have lots of stuff to amuse the kids.

Ricekrispie22 · 20/11/2018 18:12

I can recommend both Clippesby Hall and Waveney River Centre as campsites well suited to families with young children in Norfolk.

Oh I am sooo jealous! I would love this!
My suggestion is Skye (we took a camper this summer gone) and in particular Coral Beach and the fairy pools. Enjoy!

Cornwall and Devon are lovely and an obvious destination in a campervan - but they'll be so crowded in the summer and they're quite out on a limb. I'd say skip them and do them another time. I'd start in Bristol, then the Gower, Pembrokeshire and up the A487 coast road round Cardigan (Cardigan and Aberystwyth are both lovely!) and up to Snowdonia and Anglesey .... then .... then hotfoot up to the Lakes perhaps? I don't know Scotland but it strikes me you could spend 3-4 months doing that ad well, let alone 3-4 weeks, so perhaps again dip in for the say-so and save it mostly for another time? Northumbria and Hadrians Wall is pretty cool - Holy Island - then there is a big gap in my knowledge until I get to Norfolk! Hunstanton, Wells, Cromer, Southwold are all seaside fun for children but South Suffolk is also wonderfully rural. That's what I'd do. But start in Wales and you won't go wrong. It sounds like my dream trip to be honest!
I'm not a fan of the south coast - too built up.

Skyejuly · 20/11/2018 18:47

Isle of skye

blueskiesandforests · 20/11/2018 18:54

Bloody hell don't go to Whitby in a camper van... Well not actually into the town anyway. Scarborough is tacky and crowded. Kids will like it though - donkeys, amusement arcades. There is also another beach if you like being jumped on by wet off lead dogs whose owners think they're just being friendly... The roads in that area are a nightmare in summer, it takes hours to get anywhere between York and Scarborough.

I'd go to the coast of Northumberland - wild deserted beaches and castles and perhaps on up the coast of Scotland. Wales too on the return maybe.

Narrow roads will be a consideration in a family size camper van.

rosy71 · 20/11/2018 18:54

West coast of Wales from Pembrokeshire up to the lleyn peninsula, then Anglesey.

blueskiesandforests · 20/11/2018 18:55

Northumbria not Northumberland - autocorrect!

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 20/11/2018 18:59

If you don't have a lot of time for Scotland on this occasion (and it really can take a long time to drive beyond the Central Belt) here are options.
1- just do the Galloway coast (turn left after Carlise!) - quiet, rural, several campsites and activities for the wee ones, eg Cream O'Galloway ice cream farm!
2 - head up the Northumbrian coast (stunning in itself, and don't miss Alnwick), for North Berwick - several campsites and lovely beach / activities (boat trip to Bass Rock for the birds, walk up the Law for the views).

Love the sound of your trip - enjoy!

Goldenbug · 20/11/2018 19:06

Scotland. The top left. I went in the summer camping. Amazing scenery. Think it's been named as one of the top ten places to visit in the world or something. Camping there was OK but the area is PERFECT for camper vans. You can't travel more than a mile without finding a spot you'd love to stay and stare at the scenery from.

Twerking9to5 · 20/11/2018 19:57

These are all such wonderful suggestions! Thank you. I think some PPs are right in their suggestion of chunking it up a bit. Perhaps we do 2 weeks in Scotland this summer just on its own-I’ve always wanted to go and don’t want to rush it!
