We’re hosting Christmas this year and I’m stumped for sides... what is your ideal Christmas dinner?

OP posts:
HarrietKettleWasHere · 20/11/2018 11:37

Prawn cocktail to start.

Roast potatoes in beef dripping.
Not bothered about the meat, but there should be sweet potato mash and cauliflower cheese.

Cheese board

Jackshouse · 20/11/2018 11:42

I like simple turkey, pigs in blankets, roasties, carrots, sprouts and festive red cabbage and homemade cranberry sauce.

Meet0nTheIedge · 20/11/2018 11:45

No starter, I don't want the edge taking off my appetite. Apart from that, keeping it simple really, no sweet glazes on veg or similar, no braised red cabbage, bread sauce or anything in cheese or cream.

Roast turkey
Sage and onion stuffing
Roasties done in goose fat
Steamed carrots and sprouts
Pigs in blankets
Homemade gravy
Cranberry sauce

Followed by a good quality vanilla ice cream, then mince pies and coffee later.

I forgot the stuffing!

Starter - smoked salmon or pate
Pud - Christmas pudding and custard

nornironrock · 20/11/2018 11:49

All of the above - plus Yorkshire Puddings.

And the gravy needs to be top-notch.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 20/11/2018 11:53

Rib of Beef -med rare
Roast potatoes
Roast Parsnips
Cauliflower Cheese
Red Cabbage
Carrots
Leeks
( Don't like Yorkshires but would make for others)

Not fussed on starters or puddings.

One that someone else cooks. Grin

When our family got together at Christmas (logistically impossible at the moment), it was always a "pot luck" type of meal. We did it every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so it was fairly easy to organise as we all had family favourites that specific people made, so they brought them regularly. I hate the idea that one person has to cook for everyone.

NeverHadANickname · 20/11/2018 11:55

Turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets, mushy peas, roast parsnips, sprouts, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, maybe horseradish if I'm feeling it and lots of gravy. I'm thinking I'll do braised red cabbage this year too though.

For me I like the starter to be things like cured meat, cheese, olives, good breath etc. to pick at early. Always has to be a couple of desserts to choose from.

TheCrowFromBelow · 20/11/2018 11:56

Starters: gravadlax

Main: turkey, bacon lattice, pigs in blankets
Sides: Roast potatoes, mashed potato (for my roastie hating DC2), stuffing, green beans, carrots, peas, parsnips (roast or mashed haven’t decided) sprouts with bacon, and red cabbage.
Sauces: Gravy, bread sauce and cranberry sauce

Pudding: Brownies, mince pies, fruit and cheese and biscuits

chocolates and sweets

Coffee

Roast lamb, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, spiced red cabbage, roast parsnips and carrots, sauteed sprouts with walnuts, pigs in blankets, sage and onion stuffing, minty gravy and quince jelly.

Sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream.

DuchessAnnogovia · 20/11/2018 12:00

I do a roast turkey, and a roast gammon served with several kinds of vegetables, roast potatoes, homemade stuffing, pigs in blankets etc. I don't do a starter. I also do a vege meal for DH. For DS, he has his Christmas paella (he hates roasts - weird man). But he has to have one obligatory sprout!

HappyGoodHairBear · 20/11/2018 12:05

Honestly, two of the best Xmas days I have ever had have been 1. Massive Chinese takeaway 2. Massive Indian takeaway

Both delivered. Neither were the best meal ever, but there was absolutely no stress. No-one cooking for hours. We got to sit round, watch movies, chat, drink wine. It was brilliant because the reward/stress ratio was great.

mumof2sarah · 20/11/2018 12:09

Mash, roasties, croquettes, sprouts, carrots, parsnips, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, green beans, swede, Yorkshire puddings, gravy and stuffing. That's off the top of my head. We feed between 10&12 on Christmas Day so we cook portions of it all so everyone can choose what they want then. A roast is my most favourite meal anyway and Christmas Day is extra special ott lunch lol x

sophiec123 · 20/11/2018 12:09

Prawn cocktail

Turkey/gammon
Veg- Brussels/parsnips/carrots/cabbage
Yorkshire

mumof2sarah · 20/11/2018 12:10

**forgot the meat ha ha. We have turkey and beef usually. Don't do starters but have cheesecake, gateaux, Christmas pudding and mince pies on offer for dessert x

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/11/2018 12:14

No starter or I won't be able to fit in pudding, that is not an option!!

Turkey and gammon. Sausagemeat stuffing with apricots. Jamie gravy.
Roast potatoes, honey roast carrots and parsnips, cauliflower cheese, peas.
For other people I add sprouts, broccoli, swede mash and braised red cabbage.
This year we're having Yorkshire puddings too.
Thank heavens we have a double oven.

MrsEricBana · 20/11/2018 12:20

In my dreams, anything at all made by someone else while we all sit around chatting and laughing, opening presents and playing games.
What we always make and like:
Bubbles and smoked salmon blinis sitting around (no starter at the table)
Boned turkey, pigs in blankets, stuffing balls, cranberry, gravy, steamed sprouts and carrots, roasted
Christmas pud flamed with warmed brandy, brandy butter and cream
Coffee and after eights
Christmas cake, satsumas and tea later

Rachelover40 · 20/11/2018 12:25

Food, glorious food and lots of it. Plenty of stuffings, sauces, pigs in blankets.
