Help me sleep!

Scifi101 · 19/11/2018 20:01

I am so tired. I have teenagers so it's not because of babies.

I have had a particularly bad run and am desperately in need of some sleep. It's really effecting my eating. Don't eat junk as I low carb but eating too much in an uncontrolled bingy way.

Pillows? Herbal remedies? I'll try anything reasonably priced.

I found pillow spray really helpful. I had one from a company called 'this works' that helped me fall asleep in minutes. My DH rates it too.

HashTagLil · 19/11/2018 20:16

Is it that you can't get to sleep or you can't stay asleep?

SomeoneElsesOpinion · 19/11/2018 20:53

Go to bed early and take a “one a night” Nytol. Sleep well 😴

50mg Sleepease. Basically a drowsy antihistamine used as a temporary sleep aid. Works really well. Won't knock you out but will make it easier to drift off when you try to. You can get 25mg ones so might want to start with those. You can double up to 50mg if one isn't enough. Nytol (not the herbal one.) is the same stuff but leaves me a bit groggy for some reason.

That and relaxation breathing techniques are the only things that have ever helped me. Plus a pitch black room and wax earplugs.

I have pillow sprays etc (this works, Lush and Champneys.) and they're nice for creating a relaxing atmosphere but never helped me to sleep. Having a routine before you go to bed is supposed to help get your mind in the zone so a sleep spray could be part of that.

Give the sleepease a whirl though. It's good stuff.

Magnesium and vitamin D supplements (or spray magnesium).

White noise - I have fan sounds on a machine and also like rain sounds from you tube. When I was younger I liked audio books.

I have a wool duvet as they're supposed to be good for regulating temperature. I sleep best with the window open, the room cold and me wrapped up in bed but external noise means having the window open isn't always possible.

Exercise, which is tough if you're struggling but never fails to help me. Just a long amble is good enough if anything else is too much.

Sleep hygiene. Put your phone away, read a book before bed. If you wake up, resist the urge to check the time or your phone. If you can't get to/back to sleep in a reasonable time then get up and read or do something quiet. Try and develop a routine, so maybe a bath before bed or some cues to your body to start winding down. If you have a smart watch absolutely do not wear it to bed.

Tart cherry juice.

CBD oil has been genuinely life changing for me. I can get to sleep and I can stay asleep.

Just thought, I find a hot water bottle to be very comforting which helps me relax. Could try one of those too if you don't get too hot in the night? This one is very soft and the bottle itself isn't really stiff so a good one for holding

tentative What time do you think is best to take magnesium and vit D please?
I take both but never sure exactly when the best times are. I have D in the morning and magnesium early evening.

Catbot · 19/11/2018 21:13

I was a terrible sleeper. I had no trouble getting to sleep but couldn't stay asleep and had early waking and insomnia. GP diagnosed anxious depression and prescribed sertraline. Now I sleep every night all night. It has changed my life.

You may not feel depressed but it may be worth having a chat with your GP.

Cbd oil or non non drowsy anti histamine

Wordthe · 19/11/2018 21:17

Forget CBD just use proper cannabis

Squizzard · 19/11/2018 21:33

Try listening to (relatively uninteresting) podcasts.

Lila288 · 19/11/2018 21:40

ASMR

tentative3 · 19/11/2018 21:44

Enid I don't know I'm afraid, I'm still experimenting myself but I do roughly what you do in terms of timing. Mine is complicated by working shifts.

purpleworms · 19/11/2018 21:54

Second ASMR on YouTube in bed. Listen with headphones and try the different types of triggers to find what you like best. Im out within 20 minutes every time

EnidButton · 20/11/2018 17:46

Thanks Tent.Smile

goforkyourself · 20/11/2018 18:10

The ASMR videos are brilliant, ASMR Darling is my favourite Smile

Or watch old episodes of Frasier, for some reason they sent me to sleep after 5 minutes Confused
