Successful business

BusinessIdea · 19/11/2018 17:19

Life circumstances mean I can make a start on preparing to start a business.

If you started a successful business or work in one, can you please share what made it a success? Is it all down to luck or skill?

Hours and hours of hard graft

Good idea
I guess this is where a combination of luck and skill comes in?

Hours and hours of hard graft

I am not at a point in life where I have time to do this.

Lot of luck helps

Make sure you develop the skills you need! If you have a Google Digital Garage near you they have some classes that could get you started, or a Business Gateway.

I will check them out in preparation, thank you.

I am looking forward to being at the point soon where I have the time to do this, not long now.Grin

Mine is based on qualifications.

I work with a lot of small business and, although the original idea sometimes comes from luck, the end successful product is down to a lot of hard work, usually a passion, and being prepared to take advice in areas of no experience. And this is still no guarantee of success.

Funding for working capital or assets can also be a big issue but that very much depends on the business.

I have recently started my own business there is its of so our there - check out ad venture in Leeds. Use your local chamber of commerce and utilise the internet. You need a great idea, lots of perseverance and yes lots of hard graft !!

It's nothing to do with luck I'm afraid, it's all to do with lots and lots and lots of hard work. If you haven't got the time to devote to a business it won't be successful.

I have found Business development is very important. I spent half a day a week on business development, more when i started and had "less" job to do. Speaking to prospective clients working out the tender timetable and contacting the procurement departments for example. Exactly what you do will depend on your field. I also applied time to credit control, getting paid is the job.

Depending on your field client relationships are also important. Know your clients needs and be responsive. try and give them updates that stop them having to call you and you will have fewer unnecessary conversations... leaving time for business development.

Did i mention business development?

Hard work (and making time for business development)

I laugh like a drain when people tell me how lucky I am to be my own boss. I have more than a dozen bosses who all want a piece of me, usually at the same time.

Nearly 10 years now, and I wouldn't go back to employment

If the success of your business hinges on the quality of replies you get in this thread then you might as well give up now.

SheRaTheAllPowerful · 19/11/2018 18:51

Having a budget that you stick to, don’t overspend before you have money coming in. Good customer service skills and a great product.

Autofindreplace · 19/11/2018 19:00

I started my business a year ago - it took around 6 months to get going (I worked from home then to keep the costs down)

I now have a small office and two members of staff - the secret is to keep the costs down and spend most of your time and money attracting clients

Our service is quite specialist but we do get lots of nice feedback from our clients

DinosApple · 19/11/2018 20:17

Yy to keeping costs down. Don't undersell yourself, but do not oversell. Establishing a good reputation is key.

And hours and hours and hours of hard work. Even when it's well established.
