Surprised 6th forms don't offer things for kids with severe SENDS

Dd year 11 has very severe learning disabilities this was only diagnosed at end of year 10 after mostly missing the whole year of school, things are back on track and applying for EHCP.

Dd would like to stay on school and attend 6th form to re do gcse as she will not pass first time around, she is only doing gcse in core subjects

I contacted school regarding 6th form and was surprised that they offer nothing for children with sends and you have to have 5 gcse grade 4 or above ti stay on... is this standard for all 6th forms?

College is a option for Dd due to her anxiety, special needs etc she will not go to somewhere she doesn’t know and with people she doesn’t know

I think your focusing the wrong way then. Wanting to force her into a situation she won’t cope in won’t help her at all and will likely make issues worse especially if she is seeing peers thrive.

You need to be finding specialist provision/courses and then discussing transition with them to help her move as smoothly as possible - something specialist provisions will be well and Truly used to

Where are the others from her SEN unit going?

OP - you don't mean Sixth Form. They won't necessarily have the range of courses nor the remit to cover courses your DD could access.

Look for your local Further Education College, they have a much wider remit that may still include Level 1 + 2 courses, funding cuts permitting.

Ask the SEN unit staff what they suggest. They really will know best from past experience. There are some SEN units in mainstream 6th form schools - the ones I know of are for ASC though. Have you been to any post 16 colleges open days? My own son (with ASC) will be going to college. After speaking to the school my son is at, I visited a few colleges. One was particularly good. I was initially dubious but have spoken to the SEN team at the college and was impressed. There are systems in place to act as a safety net and we have worked out a way to make it all work. It is important to think about transport too - it is rare to get help with transport post 16 unless your child is physically disabled and you are on a low income.
