Just got new glasses and I hate them

I want to cry. They are big and bold and completely different to anything I've worn before. They looked OK in the opticians but I was on my own and the lady working there said they suited me so I just went for it. But they don't suit me at all. They're "trendy" and I seriously cannot pull them off. I don't want to subject you all to my face (plus, anonymity!) or else I'd put a picture, but take my word for it. I look ridiculous. I don't know what I was thinking!

To make it worse, every time I put them on I feel dizzy and sick.

Has anyone else grown to love glasses they weren't sure about hated at first?

Don't panic. Go back and talk to them. I'm sure you can't be the first person to change their mind! There will be something you can do.

Bombardier25966 · 18/11/2018 18:50

Some opticians offer returns, some do not. Speak to them.

BikeRunSki · 18/11/2018 18:51

Calm down!! I always find it takes a few days to get used to new lenses, even if the prescription hasn’t changed. And you might get used to the frames in this time. Do you thibks new haircut or make up would help? If they are very different to what yiu hace eirn in the past, thfnother things might need tweaking.

i bet they look fine. What does your partner/mum/best friend/neighbour/postman reckon?

What they look like aside, you really need to go back if you're feeling sick and dizzy went you put them on. Sounds like they may have got your prescription wrong. Maybe they can also change the frames if they need to change the lenses.

EsherGreen · 18/11/2018 18:53

Please give it a few days, seriously.

Re: the dizziness, it sometimes takes a little while to get used to a new prescription. Someone will know better than me but I would have thought an hour or two should be enough?

Rockbird · 18/11/2018 19:17

They're not varifocals are they? I just got varifocals last week and they're making me sick and dizzy.

Bluetrews25 · 18/11/2018 19:31

I've usually found that the staff in the optician are great at helping you find what suits - it is in their interest to do so. You might just hate them like so many hate a restyle at the hairdresser - it actually looks great, but it is just too different for you to be happy with yet.

BakedBeeeen · 18/11/2018 19:47

Hi OP, I had exactly the same a few years ago. Was feeling brave and chose some big trendy round frames. Went to pick them up, my strong prescription made the frames sooo heavy and they looked really terrible. I knew I wasn't going to get used to them. I was gutted because my lenses make them so flipping expensive. They were from Boots opticians. I asked mumsnet what to do. Mumsnetters said call them, which I did the next morning, they took them back, I chose some new ones and only had to pay the difference between the frames (the newer ones were slightly more expensive. Thank you Boots opticians and thank you mumsnet! So it is definitely worth trying to take them back. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. So far I've only managed to get the opinion of DH and my 6 and 10 year olds. They all say they look nice. Well.. DD said I look like I have Harry Potter glasses Confused but to her that's a good thing!

I'm going to experiment later with making my hair look nice and maybe some make up and see how they look then but I really don't think I have the confidence to wear them day to day when I generally look like shit Grin

They're not varifocals, just standard lenses for myopia and astigmatism. Do any experts know whether the size of the lense could be making it harder for me to adjust? I usually get much smaller frames and lenses and never have felt sick or dizzy before.

Luckily I can be at home most of the day today so will wear them for as long as possible to see if my eyes adjust.

I hadn't even thought about returning them, didn't think that would be possible! They're from specsavers.

ImSpeakingFigurativelyOfCourse · 19/11/2018 06:51

Specsavers have a 3 month no quibble no fuss policy so you can definitely return them Smile

pumpingRSI · 19/11/2018 06:58

Picked some glasses from spec savers with assitant's "help". Hated them when I picked them up. Went back and explained, chose some new ones. Ended up keeping both but paying a bit more. Now wear the originals I "hated" as the others slip off to easily and have got used to them. Do not despair!

hmmwhatatodo · 19/11/2018 07:51

I’m in exactly the same predicament op! I’ve even tried both pairs on and asked a few people’s opinions and have had mixed results so I’m still not convinced...

mooftoon · 19/11/2018 09:47

If they're making you feel dizzy please go back and tell them. I had exactly this happen with my new glasses last week. I could not get used to them and took them back (to boots opticians), turns out they has made some changes to the shape of the lenses and other things that didn't suit my vision and so have sent them away to be altered. I was so relieved as I thought they wouldn't listen!

Orangesandlemons82 · 19/11/2018 09:51

Specsavers are very good at changing frames and lenses, it must happen lots! Is the prescription a significant change? I would definitely go back, it shouldn't take long to adjust to the new lenses if they are still single vision.

TheVortex · 19/11/2018 10:58

I'd say hang on a bit to adjust.

This was almost exactly me about 6 months ago. Went to bold and fashionable after dull frameless for years.

I hated them for while but now I love them. So much better. Maybe give the look a bit longer and see. It might be

Dizziness can come from changes in prescriptions I believe but it's always been short lived for me.

TheVortex · 19/11/2018 10:59

Also everyone needs to get used to a new look so others opinions might not be that helpful initially. I looked so different I warned my kids before I showed them 😊

bobstersmum · 19/11/2018 11:29

Specsavers gave me a pair that I hated when I got home. They are so busy in our local one, they really do rush you to make a decision. I found they fitted really badly too as they were very heavy and hurt my nose. After 6 months I couldn't bear it any more so I went back in and they said I should have gone straight back and they'd have changed them. As it was they did me a pair at a massive discount for the trouble. If you're not happy go back op.

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 19/11/2018 11:30

I recently had to get a stronger prescription and bought a pair like you have described and a smaller pair similar to what I already had. The smaller pair I had no problems with but the other pair with the bigger lenses took me about a week to get used to. I felt really sick with them and kept changing to the smaller ones for some relief so that's probably why it took so long to adjust.

Justmuddlingalong · 19/11/2018 11:33

I think it takes a wee while to get used to a new style of frame. It's a bit like wanting to wear a hat, but worrying you'll look like a tit. Just put the hat/specs on and wear with confidence.

RubyLux · 19/11/2018 12:11

Take them back.

I've worn glasses since the age of 4. I'm very particular about them!😅
I got a pair 2 weeks ago from Spec Savers. £200 varifocals with a blueish frame. I thought they were nicely different. Now I'm wearing them, I bloody HATE them. Plus they feel weird and hurty on my nose. I took them back yesterday after trying really hard to get used to them. They exchanged them no quibble for my usual tortoiseshell style. 😊👍

llangennith · 19/11/2018 12:27

I wore glasses for years till I had replacement lens surgery at 63.
Got my glasses from Specsavers. Over the years I had two pairs that made me dizzy. First pair straightforward check and one lens was completely wrong. The second pair it took me weeks of complaining and being told I'd get used to it and there was nothing wrong with the glasses. I eventually took them to a larger branch of Specsavers who said one lens had different readings (strengths) in various different areas of the lens and it wasn't surprising I felt sick wearing them.
Mistakes happen. Complain.

bakingcupcakes · 19/11/2018 12:36

If they're a much bigger lens than you're used too then that can have an effect, so can a change in prescription. Is the dizzy/sick feeling more noticable when you look away from the centre of the lens or is it all the time?

I would try them for a few days and if they don't settle or you still dislike the frames take them back. The no quibble no fuss offered by Specsavers is for 3 months from the date of collection.

If you do take them back and the prescription is still a problem take your old glasses with you as well. It makes it much easier to work out why there's a problem if you can compare the fit etc to the old specs.

SerenDippitty · 19/11/2018 13:20

About a year ago I swapped my unobtrusive half metal frames for a much more statement pair of tortpiseshell ones. When I first got them back from the opticians I did wonder if I'd made a mistake but I love them now. Your optician wouldn't have sold you something that really doesn't suit you, as pps have said not in their interest.
