How many people actually have *parties* at Christmas?

The medi a is full of pary food, party frocks and 'how to behave at a party'.

I don't know anyone who has a party.
Most people I know catch up on sleep, have close family round for a couple of days, slouch about in their oldest comfy clothes, watch telly and cannot be arsed with the idea of party .

Who and where are all these party people buying canapes and wafting about in velvet dresses?

what do you do at these parties?

MuddlingThroughLife · 18/11/2018 21:22

We've always had a party with friends and their kids in the lead up to Christmas and also a big bash on NYE for family and friends.

I make vodka jelly shots which are our dessert after the beige buffet. We play daft games once we're well oiled and at midnight on NYE we all run out in the street banging saucepans with spoons then sing auld lang syne.

We go to 2 or 3 house parties every year. None of them are particularly dressy affairs though!

YourMilkshakeIsBetterThanMine · 18/11/2018 21:25

I'm hosting a "Christmas Party" this year. Mainly because we're all too skint to go out. So a grand total of 5 of us are having a "Christmas Party" at mine the week before Christmas. PJs optional. Food provided by Dominos. My house was offered because the carpets need cleaned anyway and DH can get us wine on the cheap.

"what do you do at these parties?"
Catch up with friends (always a mix of people I see often plus some I only see at parties) / meet new people if there are any there / probably dance (usually later on in the evening) / maybe listen to people playing music round a fire. I don't drink much or take drugs at all, but plenty of drinking & a certain amount of smoking etc generally happens.

Not sure what else to do at a party...?

SparklesAndUnicorns · 18/11/2018 21:40

Nope my house is way too small and I don't have enough friends 😂😂
I don't think I'm fancy enough for some sort of cocktail party I think it would end up getting out of hand and turn into a mad house party with the friends I do have haha

AbsentmindedWoman · 18/11/2018 21:40

Wow, reading all about the fun Christmas party schedules of others is making me feel slightly lonesome Blush Ah well.

Belindabauer · 18/11/2018 21:40

I've had small parties in the past. Sometimes Christmas Eve sometimes New Years Eve. I've always done food and everyone has come in nice/fairly dressy clothes although I never stated any sort of dress code.
Everyone always said they had a great time.

what do you do at these parties?

Well, what does anyone 'do' at any house party ?
Chat, mingle, drink, munch some nibbles, laugh, either reminisce or meet new people, spend time getting to know people better, just have fun.

Why, what do you think people would do ? Grin

I’ve been wondering where all these parties are too, as I walk past wall-to-wall glittery/velvety/sequiny dresses in Monsoon on my way to work.

I’m public sector, so no workplace party - we all pay for our own Christmas lunch, during a working day, and the senior grades of the team usually buy wine for the table (ie me and three or so others). People usually don’t go back to work after the lunch, but go straight to the pub - that’s as wild as it gets!

Everyone local to where I live lives in really quite small, suburban houses - mostly small three bed Victorian terraces, small downstairs rooms and small bedrooms. Not sure we’d fit more than 10 people in our house for a party. Have some richer friends with bigger houses, but they have small children so I guess aren’t really in the frame of mind to organise parties.

Can’t remember the last time I went to a party at Christmas!

I was made to go to a xmas party when I was 11. I sat in a corner and cried then refused to speak to anyone.

I'm going to one with my slimming world group, were all taking food(low syn food)and getting dressed up and me and my family our going to a friends house near Christmas to catch up,exchange presents and have food.

But the only time I've been to a Christmas party at someone's house was bloody carnage, the lady of the couple walked into the frontroom with barely any clothes on and ended up getting off with one of the other guests whilst her DH was there,I got locked in the sodding loo, tons of people got pissed and to make it worse we all worked together the only good part was watching the guys I'd had to fend of at the party(they were all in relationships and I was only 16) squirm every time they saw me at work after that.

Babyroobs · 19/11/2018 00:25

I have one Christmas party to go to at a friends house but he really loves Christmas and hosting. He will most likely get platters of ready made party food from Costco though and there will be plenty of alcohol. Velvet dresses unlikely.

Every time I see this thread title I read it as ‘How many people actually have ‘panties’ at Christmas?’c

MyOtherProfile · 19/11/2018 05:40

We host one for a group we are part of and we also usually host a NYE party but 're going to someone else's this year. We also have 2 other parties related to our kids and their activities. These aren't at anyone's home though.
