Does anyone else regularly get light headed when they stand up?

This has always happened to me. I often get light headed on standing up from sitting down. Sometimes I just get a bit fuzzy headed, sometimes I get really light headed and things start to go black, almost like I'm going to faint.

It happens everyday, multiple times a day. Never really thought much of it as I think it's always happened to me. But I was recently talking about it at work and no one else had this more than occasionally. Is it something I should be concerned about? My blood pressure is fine and it's checked regularly when I go for my pill.

Have you heard of POTS?

carrie74 · 17/11/2018 20:17

Low blood pressure. DH and I both have this. Mines particularly low, and was causing problems when I was exercising, so I was recommended to make sure I increased my fluids and actually eat a bit more salt. Drinking more throughout the day definitely helps me.

Positional vertigo?

Are you dizzy when you initially lie down in bed at night?

DS's friend gets this. It's POTS

ScarlettDarling · 17/11/2018 20:23

SpottingTheZebras Yes, I had a Google and read about POTS. I don't notice any change in my heart rate though and what I read mentioned heart rate racing? Not sure if that's correct...I didn't read too much, I'm prone to health anxiety and it sounded scary!

Carrie74 that's what everyone at work said but whenever I get my BP taken during my pill check, the gp always says it's perfect. I could def try drinking more fluids though, can't hurt can it?

Explodingkittens , no, no dizziness at all on lying down.

How's your iron?

HoleyCoMoley · 17/11/2018 20:24

You can see the nurse or Dr and tell them this happens, they might suggest doing your b.p. from sitting to standing to see if it drops.

mollyblack · 17/11/2018 20:26

I get this when i have to do squats, my vision goes and I feel really dizzy. I really should look in to it!

MyBrexitIsIll · 17/11/2018 20:31

Yep i wouod tell the GP about it.
Ds has that. It’s his blood pressure that is low (and is getting even lower when he stands up). He gets light headed, sometimes gas to stop until it settles down and he gets waving lines in front of his eyes!

Athena51 · 17/11/2018 20:34

Yes, happens to me regularly and has done most of my life. I have low blood pressure. As long as I don't jump up too quickly I'm okay.

Jubba · 17/11/2018 20:35

Pots. Could be. Low blood pressure more likely. Dehydration. More salt. Could be a number of things.

ScarlettDarling · 17/11/2018 20:36

Bianca don't think I've ever had my iron checked but I doubt I've a problem with that. I don't really have periods due to being on the mini pill.

Think I'll mention it next time I go for my pill check. As I say, it's happened for as long as I can remember so it can wait a few more months. I've become really aware of it since talking to other people though and discovering it isn't 'normal' for it to happen everyday.

I have had this all my life. Low blood pressure. If l jumped out of bed l would be dizzy for an hour . I have to take it gently.
Also if l have to stand for any length in the same position l feel faint. I have regularly fainted in church etc until l now don't get into that situation.
I also find having a bath makes me dizzy.
Make sure your iron levels are ok.
Usually a doctor says my blood pressure is fine 90/60 as they seem to only worry if its high.

fakeplasticbush · 17/11/2018 20:38

Yes, I've always had this. Low blood pressure. It's particularly bad if I crouch down low to look at something on bottom shelf in a shop for a minute then stand up quickly. Vision goes all tunnelly and black/sparkly, but don't usually faint. Was a problem in early pregnancy though, had to sit on floor suddenly a few times so as not to collapse.

megletthesecond · 17/11/2018 20:39

Yes. But I have low blood pressure.

sueshoes · 17/11/2018 20:40

I think it can be orthostatic hypotension. Haven't had it, just read about it ages ago so could be mixed up, but worth a look.

Nutkins24 · 17/11/2018 20:43

I’ve had this on and off. Particularly bad at the mo, breastfeeding and wonder if it’s low iron. I also have fairly low bp normally although nt had it checked recently. Never thought much of it.

ScarlettDarling · 17/11/2018 20:48

Junebirthday I also get it if I stand still for a long time and also did the fainting in church and in assembly! Fakeplastic Yes! Standing back up after crouching down in a shop is a real trigger for me. I get the black, sparkly vision too. I was dreadful during pregnancy too.

I do feel reassured that I'm not alone in this and that it doesn't seem to be anything too serious. Sounds like I need iron and bp checking though. Thanks all.

Nutkins24 · 17/11/2018 20:53

I got it so badly the other day in a shop after crouching! I thought I was actually going to faint.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 17/11/2018 20:58

Yep. Postural hypertension. I have low blood pressure. No doctor has ever thought it was a problem. It is annoying though!

Orchidflower1 · 17/11/2018 20:59

For me it’s the bending over to pick something up that does it or going up stairs.

BrassicaBabe · 17/11/2018 21:25

I regularly have to grab the wall/doorframe so that I don't pass out if I get off the sofa without pausing after sitting up. It's worse at this time of year when the room is warmer from the wood burner Hmm

Cherries101 · 17/11/2018 21:29

Sounds like high blood pressure actually. Classic text book. This happened to my aunt a lot before her stroke. Not to worry you but explain your symptoms clearly to your doctor. You need your bp monitored, standing to sitting, and you might need 24 hour heart rate monitoring.

ScarlettDarling · 17/11/2018 21:30

Those of you who are saying it happens regularly, how many times a day would you estimate it happens? I'm thinking 6 or 7 times a day for me. Mostly it's very mild and hardly noticeable, just a mild 'fuzziness'. Maybe a couple of times a day it's worse. Haven't fainted for years and years though.

Same, low blood pressure and told to up the amount of salt in my food.
