Just that really...what is too mummsy?

@lweji you were the one placing conditions on where and when it's appropriate to wear heels. You can see why you may have come across as bring judgemental.

Lweji · 17/11/2018 10:01

'This is inappropriate, unless you think it's not, then it's ok.'

What on earth is the point of even writing that.

As you're the one who wrote it, you tell me. Wink

It was funny reading the start of the thread with what people described as mumsy and stylish. And it was funny making the point that in fact it could easily be quite the opposite. Because it depends on people's taste, body shape and activities or environment.

With the leopard print example, it's fashionable now and it was once and it's probably considered stylish now. But not for me. I don't like it.
I don't care if people wear it, but I'd rather see less of it than more.
But I would really dispute the idea that a woman in heels and hair done and fashionable clothes is more stylish in the school run than a woman in jeans, a top and Converse.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 17/11/2018 10:03

The thread has moved away from what is considered stylish a couple of posts in.....

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 17/11/2018 10:05

I'm not having any luck googling 3/4 limewashed palazzo culottes though...

I'm describing them wrongly - to borrow from another PP: on trend wide leg cropped trousers. Picture that in pale denim, slightly distressed.

Lweji · 17/11/2018 10:06

You should read it again, then

MeOldChina · 17/11/2018 10:07

"Mumsy" is basically just practical and neat. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It says to me that this person takes pride in their appearance but also wears clothes that enable them to be outdoors and active.

Chocolatebourbons · 17/11/2018 10:08

Much of the attire described on this thread is what I wear to walk the dog....skinny jeans, sensible heel ankle boots, raincoat. Hmm

gamerwidow · 17/11/2018 10:09

I hate the word ‘mumsy’ It implies the wearer is sexless and boring.
It’s a word for women who have chosen comfort and practicality over fashion. It’s as bad as calling something slutty why can’t we just let women be.

gamerwidow · 17/11/2018 10:10

For myself I do mumsy and slutty and everything in the middle A’s mood and occasion dictate.

gamerwidow · 17/11/2018 10:10

A’s =as

Lookingforadvice123 · 17/11/2018 10:11

I dress the same as before (well not when pregnant, anything goes then as long as it's a hand me down - refuse to invest in maternity clothes). This is casual: skinny jeans, converse/adidas gazelles or boots (yes with no/low heel! Why would I wear heeled boots round my house on a Saturday?!) t shirts/pretty jumpers etc.

I do have a Joules coat now which I know is the middle class mummy uniform, allegedly. But surely this "uniform" is just women of a certain age (ie early thirties) tend to wear similar style.

I've dressed like this since I was in my early twenties.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 17/11/2018 10:11

@lweji I have and High heels for the school run aren't really appropriate and therefore not stylish. Unless you're going straight to work or a party seems pretty judgy to me. Who are you decide what is appropriate?

Hisaishi · 17/11/2018 10:12

lweji if you're trying to make some point about not judging, you failed pretty spectacularly, given most of what you wrote was unbelievably judgy.

Processedpea · 17/11/2018 10:14

polyester

Chocolatebourbons · 17/11/2018 10:15

Is there a difference between 'frumpy' and 'mumsy' ?

DoveSecret · 17/11/2018 10:15

Something oversized. Wear something that fits you. I saw a photo of an old school friend and she had an oversized check shirt on. Did her no favours. Under it im sure she had a great figure.

doublethink · 17/11/2018 10:18

I wear very similar clothes to those that I would wear fifteen years ago (jeans, some trainers, a fitted top) and now it looks 'mumsy' simply because I'm older, a bit less slim and my hair is thinning. It's not the clothes, it's that the clothes are on an older me!

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 17/11/2018 10:22

Dads managed to corner the market of crap Dad dancing though didn't they? At least mum dancing hasn't been invented yet. Probably because we're better. Grin

prampushingdownthehighst · 17/11/2018 10:24

Wear what the hell you want cos there is always someone out there either hating or loving your style.
When my dc were at primary school there was one mum who had a very different style to the rest of us, she wore some really different clothes but I was always in awe of her because she really didn't care what people thought and dressed to suit herself.
And bloody good on her too.
I hate certain items being described as mumsy, slutty, whatever.
There are enough things to worry about than if other women are judging your clothes.

PuppyMonkey · 17/11/2018 10:25

I have the bob. I have the flat ankle boots. I have some stripy tops and jumpers. I have skinny jeans. I have the yellow waterproof jacket (but mine isn’t from Joules, it’s from... White StuffGrin)

There is no hope for me - I AM.. Mumsy Personified. Shock

The great thing about it is ... at least I don’t have those terrible eyebrows and shiny cheekbones which are allegedly trendy these days.Grin

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 17/11/2018 10:26

Perish the thought that anyone walking to school on a wet November morning might choose to wear an anorak & flat boots.

I’ll defend any woman’s right to do the school run in stilettos, but I wish they didn’t need to park on the yellow lines outside school to drop off their little darlings, on account of not being able to make it from the car park.

Wry grin too at having to wear heels on the school run ‘cos you’re off to work. Most female suit-wearers on the tube wear trainers.

MissMarplesKnitting · 17/11/2018 10:27

This thread depressed me.

We are do quick to judge others on their dress and yet berate others who do the same.

Stop. Judging.

You don't know if that mum in her skinny jeans and "mumsy" top has had a shitty week. Has depression. Or has had to talk herself up just to get out the house. Or has no money to spare.

Or frankly, just doesn't give a shit what small minded, judgemental women think.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 17/11/2018 10:28

@ali nobody is saying women going to work have to wear heels. We just reserve the right to without judgement

DrowsyDragon · 17/11/2018 10:29

Oh dear. Apparently al,OST everywhere I shop and everything I buy is mumsy. Bit depressing. Is hush mumsy too? Just to make sure i’ve Abandoned all pretence to style

JudasPrudy · 17/11/2018 10:29

Heaven forbid any woman should look like a Mum!
