Just that really...what is too mummsy?

OP posts:
Renster · 18/11/2018 21:35

I love Fat Face and Weird Fish

RebeccaByAleneToo · 18/11/2018 21:37

I am clearly very out of the loop when it comes to what is/isn't mumsy, although I don't plan on changing the way I dress in any way. (You'll have to pry my FatFace clothes and Clarks shoes out of my cold dead hands!) Also, I had no idea that Converse wasn't considered cool anymore. Shock

Amaaboutthis · 18/11/2018 21:42

I would love to know what the mumsnetters who hate White Stuff/Fat Face etc wear. I suspect that they aren't as stylish as they think they are.

Possibly not but white stuff and Fatface is just awful. I’m rather partial to a leopard skin boot which probably makes me even more Mumsy than a Fatface wearer

danigrace · 18/11/2018 22:12

Haha well I never realised it but after reading this thread I have discovered I am incredibly mumsy!

MrsBizzyBody · 19/11/2018 00:16

Clearly, I have been dressing like a mum for years - thank god I finally had kids to justify it.

It must be so much better being a person dressed in high heels and a dry clean only top - that can't keep up with their child because they have impractical shoes on, too worried about snot or crumpling silk to get down to their kids and have a good cuddle. oh wait it's not - I have been privileged - at one point in my life (long before children) I was that person with designer shoes and bags and it's a hollow existence.

So I embrace my practical boots that mean we can trek through the leaves on the way to school, and my stripey top that doesn't show the snot. My waterproof coat that means I am prepared when the rain comes ( and it does). My large bag with snacks and drinks and spare pants. I am a mum hear me roar. Fashionistas who look down on us - raping the planet to be on trend with the right cut of jeans - is that the sum total of your existence - I pity you. I made a human being and I am forming the next generation- I don't have time for drama over impractical clothing.

I wear my uniform with pride - my tribe know me - I am Mumsy.

Cautionsharpblade · 19/11/2018 00:27

I dress like a middle class middle-aged mum on the school run. Sadly I forgot to have any children to complete the look.

CountFosco · 19/11/2018 08:17

The waterfall cardigan did a similar journey

And its fate was sealed here when it was described as looking like a giant vulva.

The point with a lot of the MC brands are are considered 'mumsy' (Fatface, White Stuff, Boden) is that they were fashionable once but are less so now. So, as that PP said they're on the wrong side of classic. Although Boden still makes good quality basics, you just have to avoid the patterns.

As to what I wear instead? COS, Uniqlo, Hush, Zara, Other Stories, and ASOS.

LoniceraJaponica · 19/11/2018 08:43

I have never found anything I like in Zara. It doesn't help that the shop in Meadowhall is like a jumble sale and I don't have the patience to go rummaging for clothes.

I wish we had a Uniqlo shop here. I don't like buying online as I am not a standard size and shape and don't have the patience to keep buying and returning stuff.

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 19/11/2018 08:59

I'm the opposite Lonicera. I luff Zara because I always do find something. Worth the rummaging imo.

This reads like a terrible mummy blog. Wtf does some of this even mean. Tribe?!

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 19/11/2018 09:22

Whoops just realised I must be mumsy then!! (A term my own mum used as a terrible insult back in the 80’s..) But I love my Boden jersey dresses with thick tights and Converse, and my comfy tunic tops with leggings, I still get compliments on how I look, and more importantly I’m happy with it so... 🤷‍♀️

Springmachine · 19/11/2018 09:39

@Shirleyphallus

Tribe seems to be some new term coined by the Instagram lot.
Often typically with MLMers too

Shirleyphallus · 19/11/2018 10:07

Thanks @springmachine

It’s a cringeworthy way to write!

IfNotNowBernard · 19/11/2018 10:14

It just completely depends where you live.
Round here it's sports leggings, trainers and a puffa jacket OR skinny jeans, long sleeved t-shirt and a posh anorak (depending on postcode).
But really those things are just what women over 25 tend to wear when casual, mums or not.
I always think people look way more frumpy in their badly paid office work uniform; black polyester slacks, patterned viscose top, acrylic cardigan.. Work wear is much harder to do well. (ime).

BusterGonad · 19/11/2018 10:34

I'm not really into this 'mumsy' bashing, but I do find leggings and tunics a fashion faux pas. I do wear them myself at home but outside the house I replace them with jegging type jeans.
I'm not into White Stuff, Fat face, Joules and bolden. But I'm sure if I looked in there there would be nice bits, I just don't feel that I'm really the type of person that wears that stuff. They do have a certain demographic and I'm not it!
H&M, Oasis, Esprit and maybe Mango, I used to love Topshop about 6 years ago but now find the majority isn't aimed at me.

SilentIsla · 19/11/2018 10:50

A tunic and leggings is just wrong. It just looks awful on anyone - except possibly an actor in Shakespearean costume.

SilentIsla · 19/11/2018 10:54

The use of the word “tribe” in this context is so painfully self conscious. Squirm.

SilentIsla · 19/11/2018 10:55

Cos
Uniqlo
Some Zara

Much better.

SilentIsla · 19/11/2018 10:57

As for Hush, it is very Emperor’s new clothes. Ugh

SilentIsla · 19/11/2018 10:59

“Who actually has a range of coordinated coats...?”

I have.

ralfeesmum · 19/11/2018 11:02

Zip-up fleece jackets - and if anyone thinks they're a good way to disguise the many extra pounds you may pile on over autumn/Xmas/New year/Winter......well, they just don't!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 19/11/2018 11:14

I always think people look way more frumpy in their badly paid office work uniform; black polyester slacks, patterned viscose top, acrylic cardigan..

Yep. This is me I'm afraid - If someone flicked a match at me I'd go up like a torch! I'm not even that badly paid, so no excuse except it's all machine washable.

Chocolatebourbons · 19/11/2018 11:22

@ralfeesmum

Bit rude. I wear a zip up fleece for practicality e.g. dog walking, and couldn't give a stuff what people like you think. Biscuit

BusterGonad · 19/11/2018 11:35

Oh, can I add I don't wear tunics either, dresses or tops, or dresses and jeans!

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 19/11/2018 11:40

I bloody love dresses. If I had to pick one type of clothing that would be it.
