Does anyone know about Micro:bits?

My son wants some for Christmas and I've no idea where to start!

Does anyone have any wisdom??

He's 7 and it looks really complicated. Are there simpler sets?
I saw his friends had light up flashing ones. But not much seems to light up on the ones I'm looking at.

Out local library has micro:bits that you can borrow, I also have a 7yo DS and we had one our recently and although he did a few things with it it wouldn’t have persuaded me to buy one. It may be worth checking if you can borrow one first.

Might be worth seeing if you have a local code club or similar that he can join. I've going they needed quite a bit of support to get started with the microbit and at the time I was looking there were very few resources and project ideas online.

Did was part of the trial year who were given them when starting secondary school so has done quite a bit in school. DS was perhaps a bit to young at 10 and although he used his at code club he's not got it out at home, he prefers writing games in scratch.

We have the basic microbit go kits (the go has a battery pack). Some of the more complex lies do look nice but seem quite expensive.
