Boys, their bits and bed-wetting: Someone talk me down and give me hope, please!

DS is 2.5. Currently in size 6+ Pampers nappies and we weren't considering potty training until after Christmas really. But for the last week every night he has woken up (at various soul-destroyingly early points) absolutely soaking wet. Initially we thought maybe the 6+s weren't big enough so put him in a 7, last night I put him in a baby dry pull up with another nappy over the top.

What has become apparent is that it's not that the nappies are leaking, it's that in the night he's grabbing his own bits and adjusting himself so he's pointing upwards and then basically inadvertently making a little fountain straight out of his nappy all over himself, his PJs, bed, bedlinen and (in a new low last night) his pillow.

We've explained to him he needs to keep his hands out of the nappy and he understands it (I think) and says sorry when he's wet. But he ends up cupping himself while he's asleep as a comfort thing.

None of this would be a problem if it wasn't for the constant wake ups for changes, interrupted sleep for the whole family and constant washing of bedlinen / duvets / plastic sheets etc. My whole house looks like a laundry and I just don't know what to do. If we potty train early presumably we'll still have the same problem as he'll be wearing night nappies for a bit, but I don't know where we go from here.

Has anyone had any similar problems and come up with any clever solutions? Please?

Maybe try some pyjamas that he can't reach down into? Onesie? Vest with poppers? Good luck!

Elzbells · 16/11/2018 09:46

Onesie or baby gro back to front so he can't undo it? Or an all in one vest with poppers.

ShowOfHands · 16/11/2018 09:49

Onesies/poppers are the way to go.

Agree with the others, that a vest with poppers or onesie is the answer.

The full body onesie is a good idea, and how about starting to reduce his fluids after dinner? In case you do start to toilet train soon. This will also reduce the amount he wees out if he does have an accident and leaks again.

Both my boys were night dry as soon as they were day dry - one at 2.5 and one at 3.

It was actually far easier than my girl who was day dry just before turning 2 without ever having an accident but I left in night nappies thinking she couldn't possibly be ready to ditch them, then struggled to get rid of the night nappies.

Both boys were that bit older day dry and as ds1 had looked at me as though I was mad when I tried to put a bedtime nappy on him after his first dry day, and told me "I don't wear nappies mummy" I ditched them all at once with ds2 as well.

Not all children are ready physically to be dry at night until later, but essentially if your DS is a light sleeper (mine all always were and are) ditch the night nappy straight away and you might be pleasantly surprised. Ds1 has never wet the bed in his life (preteen now,) and ds2 only a few times.

Ok, this is all incredibly helpful, thank you so much for taking time to reply!

Am off out to buy onesies (two, in case of accidents ;)) and will give that a try as a first step. Really interested to read people's experiences potty training though - DD is four and still a bit touch and go some nights on the wetting the bed front (although thankfully night nappies are a thing of the past). I had a thing in my head that potty training DS would be harder and now I wonder if that was just a weird thing I've picked up from nowhere in particular. You've definitely all given me food for thought!

Just wanted to pop back to say a massive thank you - two wee free nights so far!

Everyone’s advice and reassurance was much appreciated. Next step is trying to find a non-fleece onesie (DS currently sweating from the eyes as he sleeps, even if we pull his duvet down) but the whole family is feeling better for two complete nights of sleep.

Thank you so much!

Next sometimes do cotton onesie type
Babygros in bigger sizes.
I feel your pain, this was my ds around a similar age and a onesie was pretty much the answer!!

Vanillaradio · 18/11/2018 09:04

M & S might have the vests with poppers in bigger sizes, also Mothercare. Ds was similar!

FusionChefGeoff · 18/11/2018 09:19

Early potty training might not help - DS is 6 and not dry at night!

mrsfee · 18/11/2018 18:15

M&S online do vests/bodysuits in bigger sizes.
