Two failed Mirena replacements - what now?

Second attempt in a week today. Progress in that I managed to say stop before I fainted this time, but was v close run thing.

It isn't the pain (I've had four before), just that apparently my body doesn't want to tolerate insertion any more.

Lovely lovely nurse said I might be able to get one inserted in hospital, under sedation - has anyone else managed to get this?

I hate the Pill with a passion and Mirena has just been ideal for me, although I know not for everyone.

Feeling very daft and useless at the moment Sad

I had mine done by a doctor in a family planning clinic. I had local anaesthetic to the cervix, called a "cervical block". It worked well.

Sounds like it might be a good option if I can get that - do feel such a wimp, but I don't remember the pain being unmanageable, it just does weird things to me.

I had mine done under general but I’m not in the U.K....they tried in the surgery but it was too painful and the said it wasn’t going to work...

A bit of a pain really as it should’ve been a 5 min appointment and ended up having to scheduled a month later and meant 4 hours in hospital...

I had mine in under General anaesthetic in hospital it was fine the only problem was they cut the string too short so wasn't fun trying to remove it but it's very simple and easy

I had mine under GA too, but they were also cauterising fibroids and giving me a d&c (the reason I expelled the first mirena) so I was having the full MOT so to speak.

Good luck though op it's definitely worth investigating.

I have had two failed attempts, including one with a paracervical block at the local maternity hospital.

Went to the local GP for one last try, she was just about to give up when suddenly it went in. Fingers crossed it will be the same for you, a patient and very experienced coil fitter may do the trick. Perhaps try your local sexual health services, they may be used to more complex coil fits.

When your cervix is stimulated by an attempt to fit a coil, fainting does sometimes happen, I've almost done it too, it's horrible isn't it. Really hope all goes well this time.

Thanks all. It is the most hideous feeling - nausea and rank cold sweat and shakiness and feeling rotten the rest of the day.

Heartened to hear there's a way round it though.

That feeling is vagal nerve stimulation, I get it too. The block stops it. Shouldn't need a GA.
