Anyone own a Volvo? Thinking of buying one

Very, very, boring, I do apologise, but I'd like some real life opinions on Volvos if I may.

We are in the market for a new (second hand) car and are looking at the Volvo XC60 and XC90 and the estate options.

Can anyone with one tell me about them? Are they super thirsty (can't afford the new plug-in hybrid sadly)? Too big to park easily? Spacious? Sluggish? Boring?

Need to buy quickly and would really appreciate any advice/thoughts.

We have the XC90 D5. Gorgeous extras. Easy driving and parking. Bought it with 4,000 on the clock. BUT first service was £500+! Volvo main dealers are hugely expensive but warranty is voided if you don't use them. Trapped!

My dp have one. I've seen cars advertised as vintage that are younger.
It still goes to the garage for the MOT and service and back (usually without too many Rac visits to get there)

Yes - We have a V70 and it is amazing, I have had a V40 for a while and that was great too. Both so easy to drive, great visibility, economical to run & a real feeling of safety. They are very comfortable for long journey's and spacious, you can just keep putting stuff in ours.

DiveBombingSeagull · 15/11/2018 17:49

Jaguar2017 - if your name is indicative of the car you drive, then yes a Volvo might feel boring compared to a high performance sports car, but as you can see from this thread, lots of us love our boring cars Grin and find them anything but.

The heated seats in mine are more comfy than the sofa at home, I love pressing a button and the tailgate opens for me to load up the massive boot, I can put adaptive cruise control on and the car wafts along by itself keeping a nice safe distance from the car in front, warns me if someone is in my blindspot or if I am going too near to the white lines - what is not to like?!

changingname18 · 15/11/2018 17:55

Love my xc90. I ferry a lot of children around in it & I feel so safe. It does have a massive turning circle, but I love it. Find it easy to park & don't think I'll own anything but volvo's now. Seems to be reliable & it's so roomy & comfortable. I needed the extra seats & can still fit my double buggy & shopping in the back. If I'm using it when not working I put the seats down & love my big boot Smile can fit loads in there!!

pinkcardi · 15/11/2018 18:47

@Jaguar2017 yes, perhaps. Although are many family cars truly exciting?

I used to drive a powerful fancy sports car, which was fun actually, but it was also quite hard to drive (super sensitive clutch, dreadful visibility) and I used to get hassled all the time...men revving at lights trying to race me etc.

That said, I was recently very tempted to just get another one, cram the kids in the tiny back seats and travel with only one small bag at all times Smile who needs luggage as long as there is space for Gin

We have an XC60 D4 diesel - bought at a year old, it's now 2.5. I like it. We get about 40mpg

Heated windscreen is fab (we are in Scotland with north facing parking space!) Servicing is expensive. Parking is fine - it's a bit wide, but not very long.

Boot is good for an suv but not as good as our old octavia - we bought a roof box for camping too 😁

We did have a fault about a year ago - car just randomly "stopped". Turned out that it was a faulty fuel sensor, so we'd actually run out of fuel but the dash was reading third of a tank. It took garage two days to work out what was up and more to fix - but we did get full monty support from their warranty breakdown service, including replacement car so we could continue holiday etc.

We have had two xc90s (4 kids) and I love them. They are relatively thirsty but very comfortable to drive with loads of space. The intergrated booster is my favourite bit.

Our xc90 has 104,000 miles on the clock so they do keep going (with a bit of work to tide them over). When we were looking we were shocked at how many older/ ones with loads of miles there are- they just keep going and going.

The services are pretty expensive but if you’re an Audi owner currently then I guess they’re similar.

EastMids2 · 15/11/2018 20:02

XC60 D4AWD, 5 year old car purchased last year, diesel automatic - I love it and wouldn't want to have anything else now (maybe an XC90 if we could afford it!). Comfortable, very easy to drive, feels "safer" being up a little higher, not that expensive to run and the local Volvo dealership service is excellent. No hesitation is recommending.

carnitine · 15/11/2018 20:59

Have had several XC90's. Current is a diesel, 2 years old. We get great mileage from the diesel, I do a lot of kilometres.

We bought it new, it was a new model which had just been released when we bought it, we had loads of problems with the onboard computer thingy, it would give all sorts of warnings and several times it instigated the automatic braking without there being anything in front of us, which was pretty scary. .

As a result, it was in the garage every few weeks, they would re-boot the computer and it would be okay for another few weeks until it all went haywire again,, we were really pissed off about it. The last re-boot and update seems to have done the trick as we haven't had any problems for 9 months or so, hope I haven't jinxed it now.

So if you are buying the new model, make sure it is not one of the early 2016 production. The garage told us they sorted out the problem with the later cars off the production line.

Volvo v70 here.

It's practical, built like a tank and very roomy. Comfy, heavy, good quality.

I have the v50. I love it. I really do. I find it very easy to park.

fluffandnonsense37 · 15/11/2018 22:08

I have had an xc60 for three years. We get 35 miles to the gallon. Love the auto tailgate and the integrated booster seats are awesome. Hardly anyone else does these (they come with the family pack). Press a button and the booster disappears and it becomes a normal rear seat in two seconds. Easy to drive, comfortable. I have bashed it up left right and centre though.

DiveBombingSeagull · 16/11/2018 07:39

Someone said servicing was costly but just compared Volvo service prices against a Ford Mondeo - interim service for mine was £240 I think and next one - major service £430 - for an auto Mondeo it is £209 and £499 respectively so no massively more expensive for similar sized car.
