Any recommendations for books for an almost 10 year old

I’m going to be spending Christmas with my friend and his family. I don’t see them often as they live far away so haven’t seen his daughter for almost 2 years. I’ve asked what his daughter would like as a present and have been old she absolutely loves reading. I asked what sort of books and the answers were quite vague (basically he doesn’t really know).
So can any of you wise people give me any ideas of what 10 year olds like to read these days? I’m still stuck in the era of the famous five!

Herbert Horacio: How to raise your grown ups by Lauren Child.
Been on a training course today and this book was mentioned. I’ll be buying it for my 10 year old as it is fab.

DD10 recently read "The Creakers" by Tom Fletcher and loved it.
If you want to go with a Classic she's reread Matilda a few times n would happily read it again.

Wonder is a brilliant book for this age or A monster calls by Patrick Ness.

Holes by Louis Sachar

My daughter has just read & enjoyed David Baddiels books, Birthday boy & the parent agency there's a new one out Head Kid. David Walliams is another popular author. She has just started reading The School for Good & Evil. I would get a Waterstones gift card if you are stuck for ideas and maybe buy something to go with it, like stationery (smiggle) is popular at this age.

My dd is almost 10 and loves the Percy Jackson series and other Rick Riordan books

My 10 yr old daughter loves the Scarlet & Ivy series by Sophie Cleverly. She's read them all twice and is anxiously waiting for the sixth book due out in January!

David Walliams books are all really good Smile

The white giraffe and others by Lauren St. John have been popular amongst DD’s friends recently.
She’s also just started the northern lights which I thought might be a bit old for her but she is enjoying.
Percy Jackson also popular here.
Or what about one of the illustrated Harry Potter books-they are lovely even if she has already read them

I would get her a voucher (or a cheap e-reader if you're pushing the boat out).

Otherwise the Ruby Redfort series by Lauren Child is going down well here.

My dd absolutely loves getting book tokens so she can go into Waterstones and choose something herself. She would probably prefer that to getting a random book that she might or might not have already read. Going into a bookshop is one of her favourite treats :)

If you wanted to choose an actual book, some of her favourite series at the moment are Warrior Cats, Harry Potter, Goth Girl, Scarlet and Ivy, and Ottoline.

My 9 year old loves Michael Morpego

concretesieve · 14/11/2018 22:06

Roddy Doyle's A Greyhound of a Girl.

I wouldn’t buy A Monster Calls for any child that wasn’t my own

Agree with Wonder though - book way better than film and both my DC loved it at that age.

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr. Great book.
