Which camera should I buy?

I want to buy a new camera, I last bought one about 15 years ago and it needs replacing and updating.

I'm not sure if I need a compact, a bridge, a DSLR or something else. I heard about mirror or mirrorless or something?

My budget is up to about £450

My wishlist is:
Ideally not too big, I don't want to fill a rucksack with camera when I go out
My main thing is getting good pics of kids at play dates etc
I'd also like it to give good performance in low light - eg nice campfire pictures
If I could get decent landscape type pics for blowing up to A4 that would be lovely, no bigger than this needed
The 4k video where you take a film of pics and and can choose the best one sounds very good for kids running around. Is it any good? Can I get it in my price range?

I don't have any particular brand affinity. I'd like it to be a fairly simple intuitive interface, and I do want a viewfinder

Hit me with your recommendations! TIA

Ooh I love my DSLR! The quality is awesome. Takes a little bit of getting used to but it’s worth it. It’s on the bigger side compared to a compact but worth it. I tried having a compact for holiday and I found it so limiting. I have a Canon but you’d get an SLR of any good brand for that sort of budget.

Yay some replies!

Zoom... Hmm... I want some zoom, but probably don't need enough to get a pic of celeb sunbathing from a mile away. So zoom is needed but not a huge priority.

More replies and recommendations please 🙏

ive got an old nikon d50 with a orime lens, will upgrade soon either to another more modern nikon as i have lenses as already or go over to mirrorless on olympus

Have a look at the canon eos m6. There is a new one coming out next year. I got the /current/ old model which is enough for me 30% off.

It’s a small camera compared to slr but still has some manual functionality and you can swap the lenses on it. I got rid of my slr, because of the size really. It did take much better pics, but I found I wasn’t using it

For the quality and size photos you're looking for, I'd say you may be better off looking at a bridge or DSLR.
A bridge has the advantage of being more "compact" so taking up less space and less faffing around when it comes to lenses, so works out cheaper in the long run.
With a DSLR, you have way more options than the bridge gives you. But just be aware that lenses can be expensive.
I've had both ( a Fujifilm bridge and Cannon DSLR) and used the bridge as a stepping stone to the DSLR that I've had for about 8 years.
If you go for the DSLR the best thing is to have time where you can have a play with all the different settings and find what works for you as the user manual can leave you just sticking to the automatic setting and you're no better off (quality wise) than if you'd got a bridge or top level compact.
In your shoes and with your budget, I'd look at the following DSLRs:
Canon EOS 4000D (18 mp which is easily enough for A4 sized photos)
Nikon D3400 (Good entry level Nikon with higher mp, though there won't be a noticeable difference at A4 size)
As I don't use bridge cameras anymore, I can't make a recommendation on which ones would be best for your budget without having a good look at the cameras in your price range. But, I'd say that Canon, Nikon or Sony would be good ones to look at. I'm not sure if Fuji still make bridge cameras, but if they do, I'd recommend them as never had many problems with my Fuji bridge.
