How many months mortgage equivalent do you spend?

Dh and I are tied due to his job to school holidays and we have two dc under 10. A week abroad is around 2.5k. I understand that this is probably "market value" but it smarts that this would be the equivalent of 6 months mortgage repayments.

We have a small income to match our small mortgage. Which also makes it a challenge. However I would so love to take the dc abroad.

It got me thinking of others and the equivalent in mortgage payments in relation to holidays. Id love it if ours was around 2/2.5months worth!

We go on several holidays a year. I spend about £5k on them per year. Single mum to one DS so just the 2 of us.

I rent and it's the equivalent of a year's rent. I'm saving for a mortgage at the moment as well.

My income is low but my outgoings are low too. Travel is a big priority for me.

Its not relevant. Someone might spend half of one months mortgage payments but have such a big mortgage its a major sacrifice in terms of disposable income. Someone else could spend many months worth of tiny mortgage payment but be prioritising holiday spends over house spend and it be a breeze.

Interesting way of looking at it.

2017 we spent around 13 months mortgage payments, 2018 we will have spent 6.5 months mortgage payments and are doing a big holiday next year which is costing 16 months mortgage payments before spending money. These are all on the main annual family holiday and does not include weekends or trips individually or as a couple. And out mortgage is not particularly small at around £900 per month.

Wow, I know I say we spend all our money on holidays and eating out but wow, putting it like that does put it into perspective Shock. That said, we do value holidays very highly...

We didn't go abroad at all when DC were young, not because we couldn't afford it but because I just couldn't justify (to myself) spending so much money, when we could have a perfectly lovely holiday in UK. And we did have some really good holidays.

Since their mid teens we have been on some really big trips, and costing around three month's salary but I consider I've been saving all their lives for those.

I'm glad we did it that way. The big trips, rather than expensive but "ordinary" foreign beach trips.

Nquartz · 14/11/2018 16:59

Oh boy, we went to Florida this summer which was a years worth of mortgage payments ShockShockShock

Nquartz · 14/11/2018 17:01

I agree with Bestseller we'd prefer one big exciting (expensive) holiday over multiple beach holidays.

We have U.K. breaks too which DD enjoys just as much as the Big abroad holidays

We’ve just spent 5k on 2 weeks abroad, it’s not something we could do every year
