Period headache help

PoptartPoptart · 14/11/2018 15:50

Every month on day 1 and 2 of my period I get the most horrendous headache, bordering on a migraine.
The usual combo of paracetamol/ibuprofen don’t seem to touch it.
A quick google tells me that it’s due to the drop in Estrogen.
Are there any supplements or medication you can recommend to help?

I get these sometimes, they are horrendous. They improved significantly after ditching tampons. (Am not an employee of mooncup, honest!).

I agree tampons seemed to exacerbate the problem so I stopped using them but still get the headaches.

The only thing that helped mine was to start taking Agnus Castus, could that be worth a try? You have my sympathy, they're not like normal headaches.

Have you tried the pink migraleave?
If they work better than normal pain killers it may be a menstrual migraine.

FoodGloriousFud · 14/11/2018 16:33

I change my pill to cerazette as the headaches during my week off left me unable to function.

I had them and it was horrendous. Then I came off my birth control pills for a month when doing some testing for another medical issue and I never got the headache when AF arrived. I stayed off the BC and haven't had one since in months. DH just has to use condoms now (and hates it) Boo bloody hoo.

Migraleve is just ibuprofen paracetamol and an anti nausea. It's cheaper to match the dosage using generics.

I suffered really badly for years and tried everything.

Ultimately reducing simple carbs and taking the mini pill have helped a lot. I have a zomatriptan pill for when they hit, it takes the edge off.

The other things they tried were beta blockers, anti depressants and a pill usually used for epilepsy. All of these drugs are supposed to have a side effect of reducing migraines. But apparently hormonal ones are a bit more challenging.

Good luck

I have these and take ibuprofen with codeine from the pharmacist. They're the only thing I've found even takes the edge off.

umberellaonesie · 14/11/2018 16:46

I take my pill continously with no withdrawal bleed so no withdrawal headache.
It is fantastic to have no periods too

BibiThree · 14/11/2018 16:49

Forgot to mention, I don't use any contraception so no other hormones at play. It's purely because my body hates me.

BabloHoney · 14/11/2018 16:49

I get this too, usually on day 4 or 5! It's horrible isn't it, will be following this for tips!

I came off the pill about 6 months ago (cerazette) because it was really affecting my sex drive - it was practically non existent. Apart from that side effect I loved being on the pill - I never had a period while on it and never experienced any headaches or anything.
Since coming off the pill my sex drive has increased massively! But the monthly headaches have just got worse and worse. Seriously for 2-3 days I just cannot shift it no matter how much medication I take. It’s awful. I’m seriously considering going back on the pill but am reluctant to wave goodbye to my sex drive again.
Argh!
