Migraine suffers, what do I need to be asking the doctor for?

Have had a migraine since last Thursday. Paracetamol and OTC co-codamol worked until Day 4 and now not working at all.

I can't take ibuprofen as allergic.

I'm not sure what the doctor can offer as I've never suffered with them for this long or not needed to use prescriptions meds.

It's stress related but I already take antidepressants, do I need to up my dosage?

This is an absolutely last resort, and I feel guilty going to the doctors with a headache but I have a 3 year old I'm a LP to and can't spend another day in bed instead of looking after her (she's been at Nursery yesterday and today) as she has SN and struggles with anxiety so will be worrying about me.

I take Triptans for my migraines

Fstar · 14/11/2018 15:06

I take sumatripitan which works for me, does make me feel quesy though and have weird hypersensitive skin and mouth for a few hours (hot coffee feels ljke its burning me). Rizatripitan also good. Maybe keep a diary if you get them a lot for gp to decide best action

Imigran nasal spray. No sickness, works best the sooner you take it.
Sufferer for 30 years with nothing else working!!

I don't get them often thankfully! And when I do get them, they usually only last a couple of days so I can juggle DDs Nursery days around or call in favours from friends.

I can't do that now as it's been ongoing for so long.

Poor you. Sounds odd but I find Red Bull (along with meds) really helpful, as does my DBro. I'm not sure you can take triptans with ADs, can you? DBro is on Prozac and doesn't think he can, though I find Immigran helpful.

I have just been put on beata blockers for migraine prevention. I went mid migraine and broke down. I didnt want anti depressants so this was Compromise as they lower yoir blood pressure and help with anxiety/stress. Hop you feel better soon x

FissionChips · 14/11/2018 15:32

Sumatriptan works for me

museumum · 14/11/2018 15:34

sumatriptan shifts mine but does also cause drowsiness but does allow me to sleep it off and reduces the visual distortion and speech difficulties I get.
Do go to the GP though please as there was a poster here not long ago whose husband thought he had a migraine but actually had something more serious (I can't remember what).

TheQueef · 14/11/2018 15:38

I suffer abdominal migraine.
Preventing I take propanalol, metroclopramide, pregabalin and some travel sick patches.
When I have a migraine I vomit so most of my drugs go another route.
I have different triptans Samaritan tablets, rizatriptan wafers ( for me the wafers have few side effects) sumatriptan nasal spray and sumatriptan injectors. Diclofenac suppositaries and calpol.

The paracetamol and codeine could be causing you rebound headaches. A Neurologist would advise you to stop taking these, cut caffeine out and ensure you are getting uninterrupted sleep.
There are many migraine preventative drugs out there. But most of them take a few months to build up in your system before you can feel the full benefit. Although there are others. Definitely go and see your GP.
Migraines are so debilitating and not everyone understands. I hope you feel much better soon. Thanks

Sumatriptan and and an ice pack on the area of pain works for me

RTFT · 14/11/2018 18:46

Was taking triptans, they did fuck all. Doc put me on propanalol as a preventative 8 months ago and I've had one since because I missed a couple

Jimjamjooney · 14/11/2018 18:50

Just wanted to check you weren’t taking cocodamol and paracetamol together were you OP?

WhyDidIEatThat · 14/11/2018 18:51

Some kind of triptan, there’s a magic injection which is just 👌

CatLadyToddlerMother · 14/11/2018 18:52

No i took paracetamol for the first 2 days, then when it didn't work on day 3 I took co-codamol 6 hours after the dose of paraccetamol

I’ve got a sinus infection causing the headache. Been given some Naproxen, prescription co-codamol and a nasal spray for the infection

Blazeisamonster · 14/11/2018 20:31

Sumatriptan with codeine for me as the sumatriptans alone wasn’t shifting them.

wowfudge · 14/11/2018 20:58

I thought migraines lasted up to 72 hours so you might be suffering from something else? I am a migraine sufferer. I take sumatriptan and have just been prescribed propranolol as a preventative.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 14/11/2018 21:00

wowfudge I’ve been to the doctors now and I have a sinus infection. Been given some antibiotic nasal spray, prescription co-codamol and naproxen.

Are you sure it's migraine? I have a nerve that goes across my cheek and causes me headaches which I thought it was migraines for about 10 years. I have meds, not meant to have caffeine, or choc and can only have 8 hours sleep - no more no less. It's the worse pain ever, with nausness but also feeling hungry, a pain in the ear, runny nose and a red runny eye.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 14/11/2018 21:08

Bluewidow I’ve been to see the doctor and I have a sinus infection causing the headache.

When mine were bad beta blockers helped, I took propranolol. I take co codamol 30/500 for back pain so I just take them and they are excellent for the pain.

wowfudge · 14/11/2018 22:11

Sorry OP, I somehow misunderstood what you'd posted. Hope you feel better soon.
