I need a good fantasy or sci-fi recommendation urgently!

Just finished Deborah Harkness’ Time’s Convert and the preceding trilogy, enjoyed it but definitely wasn’t love bit too much like Twilight.

Brandon Sanderson is one of my favourites but I think I’ve exhausted his oeuvre. Read Wheel of Time, the powder mage books, Tolkien, Pratchett, Ursula Le Guin, most Neil Gaiman and Dan Simmons too as well as a lot of enjoyable shite like the Shadowhunter books..

I’m unsure what next- very grateful for any recommendations. I need something soon though as it’s the first time in ages I haven’t had my next book/ series lined up and am feeling all twitchy!

(For full disclosure I do actually have an entire shelf of unread books but they’re not ‘speaking’ to me at the moment Blush.)

Adding to votes for Robin Hobb, she is the best!

Trudy Canavan is also good, as I think someone had said.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Mercedes Lackey yet. She churns out good, easy to read stories! Probably slightly better than Davis Eddings. I like her books anyway.

I've just discovered Sarah J Maas too.

Extracted by RR Haywood!

All of the above, love so many of these suggestions and will be getting some.

Also to add Naomi Novik is good, fairytales retold in a fantasy world.

Genevieve Cogman The Invisible Library series.

11:22:63 by Stephen King is very good.

UpstartCrow · 14/11/2018 21:47

Another vote for the Wool trilogy, for 11:22:63, and I'm halfway through Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King.
The Girl With All the Gifts is a good read, more sci fi and less horror than the film.

Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson
Culture Series - Iain M Banks
Hyperion Cantos - Dan Simmons
Forever War - Joe Haldeman
Pretty much anything in the Sci-Fi Masterworks series
Dune - Frank Herbert
Altered Carbon & the rest of the Kovacs Series - Richard K Morgan
The City and the City or King Rat - China Mieville
Pandora's Star & the rest of that series - Peter Hamilton
... and if you can the sexist crap in it and focus on the imagination, the Lensman Series - EE Doc Smith

Yy to The Invisible Library. I have the new one on preorder and can't wait!

SoupDragon · 15/11/2018 13:57

You're reminded me that I'm behind on my Invisible Library Reading.

chemenger · 15/11/2018 14:00

Its years since I read them but the Dragons of Pern series by Anne Mcaffery used to be favourites of mine.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 15/11/2018 16:22

I second Katharine Kerr's Deverry Cycle books as well.
Yep to Eddings too.
Anything by Michael moorcock.

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 15/11/2018 16:47

Given my user name I should probably put in a vote for Natasha Pulley - especially The Watchmaker of Filigree Sr.

I second Patrick Rothfuss Name of the wind. Loved that series!!

Swan So g by Robert R McCammon

WhatTimeIsItCuckoo · 15/11/2018 17:05

I'm currently studying an MA in English and one of the books on my module is Neuromancer by William Gibson circa 1983/84. Not my thing at all personally but you may well enjoy it as a science fiction fan Smile

WhatTimeIsItCuckoo · 15/11/2018 17:17

P.S. I should have said, although it wasn't/isn't my thing I read it all for the sake of my course and can see why it's highly regarded. Worth a look I think Smile

Knittink · 15/11/2018 17:21

Another vote for Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles. If only he'd get off his arse and write the final book! The first one is my favourite book of all time though.

StillMedusa · 15/11/2018 17:23

I've just binged read 9 of Robin Hobb#s Farseer books (and about to read the Liveship series ) They are SOOOOOO good!

Binglebong · 19/11/2018 17:29

I've not read any of these yet but thought this might interest some on this thread.
