I’m 34 and due to circumstances (carer to my young son with asd) I’m not working at the moment. To stop my brain turning to mush I have began a 2 year part time diploma to enable me to get into university, problem is I don’t know what I want to do!
Points to factor in:
Full on/shift work would likely be hard due to ds and needing to be available for him as he grows
I am so squeamish so don’t want to do anything in the medical profession although I would love to help people.
Ideally I would like a career with plenty of room to progress at my own pace and something I find really interesting.

My diploma gains me access to most university courses except those which need the extra science modules
I am very interested in psychology/mental health/ counselling etc but these all have very vague pathways I think?

I realise how lucky I am to have this opportunity and don’t want to squander it but everyone on my course has a career path mapped out and I’m just here like 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well at 34 you've got at least another 30 years on the labour market so I wouldn't panic just yet about not having a specific plan.

I think due to shifts you can rule out MH nursing, but I would research what psychology grads do. Does your nearest uni have any courses that you like the look of? Could you throw money at a career coach? Are there any online aptitude tests - they usually bring up interesting ideas. Or you could have a look at linked in. Just loook at peoples profiles and see who they work for and whhat they do.

There's a book called 'what colour is your parachute?' that may be worth reading.

@redexpat thank you! Lots of useful ideas here, hadn’t thought at all of online aptitude tests, I do like the sound of psychology but I’m worried that i don’t know enough about where I can take it, and if I don’t like it when I’ve started I don’t know what I’d do 🙈 I could definitely take a look around at some uni open days too I guess? I really just want someone to sit me down and say this is what you would enjoy, and here’s what you need to do to get there!
I’m honestly not even looking to make my fortune, I just want a career I love and that fulfills me, after so many years doing dead end admin I want to grab this opportunity with both hands.

@jupiterdrops going to download a sample of the book onto my kindle now :)
